Dresden: Where to Stay

Where you base yourself in Dresden comes down to how much walking you want to do versus how much nightlife or quiet you want at the end of the day. Four areas cover almost every trip.
Altstadt
The walkable choice, within reach of the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, and the Semperoper on foot, and where the palace-view hotels sit: the Kempinski Taschenbergpalais and the Hyperion Hotel am Schloss among them. If this is your first trip and you want to minimize transit time, this is the area.
Innere Neustadt
Just across the Augustusbrücke from the Altstadt, quieter than the old town itself while staying an easy walk from it. The Bülow Palais sits here. A good middle ground if you want proximity without the Altstadt’s tourist density right outside your door.
Äußere Neustadt
The nightlife and budget side of the river: bars, street art, and later hours than anywhere in the Altstadt. Worth choosing if evenings out matter more to your trip than a short walk to the Frauenkirche in the morning; either way you’re still only a tram ride from the core sights.
Near the Hauptbahnhof
The practical choice if Dresden is a base for day trips rather than the destination itself: direct access to trains for Meissen, Saxon Switzerland, and Leipzig without needing to cross the city first. Less charm than the other three, more convenience if your days are built around getting in and out.
Beyond named hotels
Plenty of well-reviewed mid-range hotels and short-term apartments exist across all four areas beyond the handful of standout properties named above; search by neighborhood rather than chasing a single named recommendation. Dresden’s compact enough that any Altstadt-adjacent or Neustadt option within a 10-15 minute walk or one tram stop of the center works fine for most trips.
Whichever area you land in, Dresden’s DVB tram network (day pass roughly €9.50) connects all four to the Altstadt in under 15 minutes, so the choice matters less for logistics than it does for the kind of evening you want.
Booking around the calendar
Rates climb hardest around the Striezelmarkt (25 November-24 December 2026), when Christmas market crowds fill the Altstadt’s hotels first. Check current Dresden hotel rates before locking in dates, especially if you’re visiting in that window.
