InterCity also sells a Hobbiton and Waitomo day tour from Auckland or Rotorua, listed from about $380 to $440. Hobbiton at Matamata is about 100 km from Waitomo, roughly 1.5 hours by road.
A cave day
Book the cave first and plan around it. Check in 30 minutes before departure. A single cave fits easily into a day: the Glowworm Cave takes 45 minutes and Ruakuri about 2 hours. The Most Popular Combo covers both from $179 adult and $80 child. Ruakuri is about a 10-minute drive from the village. Prices are in NZD and change by season, so check the operator for current rates.
Day trips from Waitomo village
- Otorohanga Kiwi House, about 20 minutes away. Open 9am to 5pm daily except 25 December. Entry is $29.50 adult (16 and over), $13.50 child (5 to 15), under 5 free, and $75 for a family of 2 adults and 3 children. Keeper talks are at 10:30am and 1:30pm and are included.
- Kawhia Ocean Beach, over an hour away. Dig your own pool in the sand within about 2 hours either side of low tide, and bring a spade.
- Marokopa and Kiritehere Beach, about 45 minutes away. The beach has fossil shell beds with Triassic clams, and the fossil platform is about 1 km from the car park.
- Pureora Forest and the Timber Trail, an 85 km Great Ride from Pureora to Ongarue, better suited to a longer visit than a quick detour.
- Te Anga Road, west of Waitomo, for Piripiri Cave, Marokopa Falls and Mangapohue Natural Bridge. See sightseeing in Waitomo for each stop.
Road tips
Te Anga Road is narrow and winding, with a history of slips and flooding. The district had a major flood in October 2025 that cut roads between Waitomo and Marokopa, so check operator and council notices before you drive it. There is no fuel west of Waitomo, so fill up at Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti.
