Deçan and Visoki Dečani
The monastery of Visoki Dečani, founded in 1327, is a Serbian Orthodox monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Its church holds about twenty fresco cycles with more than 1,000 compositions, and the tomb of the founder, King Stefan Dečanski. Visiting hours are 09:30 to 14:30 and 15:30 to 17:30, so the monastery closes at midday. An Italian KFOR unit guards it around the clock, and visitors hand over a passport or national ID at the gate, so carry one. Dress modestly, and note that photography is not allowed inside the church.
From Deçan town it is a short taxi ride or a 10 to 15 minute walk to the gate. This is an active religious community, so keep voices low.
Prizren
Prizren has an old town, a stone bridge, a fortress and the Sinan Pasha Mosque. Allow a full day, because the last bus back leaves around 18:30.
Peja
Peja is home to the Patriarchate of Peć, a UNESCO site guarded by Kosovo Police, where a passport is checked at the entrance. It opens at about 09:30, so check ahead. The entrance of the Rugova Gorge is 3 to 6 km from the centre, with a via ferrata and a zip line, and rafting and via ferrata operate there. Rugova is about 40 km from Gjakova, so combining it with Dečani in one day works only by car. The White Drin Waterfall and the Sleeping Beauty Cave lie near Radavc, 8 to 11 km from Peja.
Smaller Outings
- Junik, about 20 km via Batushë, has stone kullas and a trailhead into the Accursed Mountains. The Erenik rises on Gjeravica, at 2,656 m the highest peak in Kosovo, a guided multi-day or long day hike.
- Rahovec wine country, with the Stone Castle winery.
- Kusar Cave, about 9 km away, has a stepped courtyard and two chambers. Bring a torch.
- Lake Radoniq, 10 to 12 km north, is the town’s drinking-water reservoir. Walk the shore and enjoy the views, but do not swim.
Landmines and unexploded ordnance remain in remoter parts of Kosovo, so stay on marked trails in the hills.
