Guided Tours and Tour Options in Turkistan
Three Ways to See the Sights
Visitors to Turkistan usually choose between a guide at the Azret Sultan reserve, a one-day operator tour that adds Otrar and Arystan Bab, or a hired driver. Which one fits depends on how much of the surrounding country you want to see and how much you want to arrange yourself.
Guides at the Reserve
Guided visits of the Yasawi Mausoleum precinct are arranged through the reserve’s ticket office. Ask there for the current guide fee, and bring your original passport because entry means turnstiles, an ID check and bag screening. The mausoleum ticket for foreign visitors from outside the CIS is 5,000 KZT. The dome is under a canopy while restoration is under way, so a guide can tell you which rooms are open on the day.
One-Day Tours with Otrar and Arystan Bab
The usual day tour joins the Turkistan monuments with Otrar and Arystan Bab and starts from Turkistan or from Shymkent. Advantour quotes a private version from about US$110 per person for a group of four, with entrance fees, guide and transport included in 2026. A group tour is listed on Expedia at about EUR 238 per adult, and Welcome.kz and Eurasia.travel sell similar days. Read the inclusions closely, because site entry fees are often left out of the price.
Packages from Almaty
Operators build two- and three-day Turkistan packages from Almaty. Advantour’s version puts guests in the Karavansaray Family or Harbour hotel, and its three-day itinerary links Turkistan, Otrar and Ukasha Ata. Almaty is roughly 850 km away by road, so these tours assume a flight or an overnight train.
Hiring a Driver
A self-arranged driver is the cheapest option for a single site. A return taxi to Sauran has been quoted at about 8,000 KZT, and a hotel-booked return to Otrar at about 15,000 KZT. Agree the price, the waiting time and the stops before you leave. Tell the driver “Krepost Sauran” so you do not end up in the village of the same name.
An Evening Add-On
The Karavansaray complex is free to walk into and shows its Parade of Boats on the canal each night, usually around 20:00 to 21:00. Its Kerege restaurant runs the “Endless Love” dinner show, with a 10% discount for outside guests and 15% for hotel guests. Confirm show days when you book.
Choosing Well
Ask any operator which sites are included, whether guide and entry fees are in the price, how long you will have at each stop, and where the group lunches. In summer, prefer departures at dawn since Sauran has no shade at all.
