Romantic Evenings in Turkistan
What a Romantic Stay Looks Like
Turkistan is a pilgrimage and heritage town, so its romance is quiet and centred on the evening. The hotel, the dinner and the canal show at the Karavansaray are the draw, and the rest of the city is better treated as sightseeing. A stay of two nights is enough.
Where to Stay
The Karavansaray Turkistan Hotel, also called the Harbour Hotel, has harbour-view suites with balconies, the Anjana spa and the Kerege restaurant for breakfast. Packages combining a suite and spa treatments are sold through the hotel. Hampton by Hilton Turkistan is a simpler option about 10 minutes’ walk from the Azret Sultan precinct. Rixos Turkistan and Ramada by Wyndham also list rooms.
The Evening Show on the Water
The Parade of Boats is the one set piece that suits a couple. It runs on the Karavansaray canal each night, usually around 20:00 to 21:00 depending on the season, and tells the story of the lovers Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek. Watching is free from the banks. Walk the canal paths before or after for a quiet stroll once the day’s heat has gone. A “Kyz Kuu” equestrian show is also advertised, so ask the hotel for days and times.
Dinner
Kerege runs an “Endless Love” dinner show, with a 10% discount for outside guests and 15% for hotel guests. Sandyq, on the Karavansaray grounds, serves traditional Kazakh dishes, and Edem, Al-Fatih and Bayterek are other restaurants guides mention in town. Book ahead for show nights and take cash tenge for taxis.
A Shared Experience
The Altyn Samruk Flying Theatre offers a 30-minute 8D “Flight over Kazakhstan” for up to 40 people, at about 6,500 to 7,800 KZT per adult. It is a short, fun add-on in the afternoon, but not a quiet one.
Timing and Seasons
April, May, September and October bring mild evenings. July heat reaches 35 to 40 C, so keep afternoons for the hotel and the spa, and go out after sunset. The old-town monuments close in the evening, so daytime sightseeing needs an early plan.
Water and Nightlife
The Syr Darya is a lowland irrigation river, so the town has no beach, fishing trips or boat excursions on the river, and its water scenery is the canal at the Karavansaray. Beyond a hotel, a dinner and a show, little else is on offer, so a day trip to Otrar adds variety.
