Family Activities in Turkistan
Where Families Spend Their Time
Most family time in Turkistan is spent at the Karavansaray, a landscaped complex of canals, shops and restaurants that opened in April 2021 and covers 20.5 hectares. Entry is free. Add the ethno-aul craft area and an evening show and you have a full day.
Altyn Samruk Flying Theatre
The Altyn Samruk is an egg-shaped building with an 8D flight over Kazakhstan that lasts about 30 minutes and takes up to 40 people. Children aged 4 to 12 have their own ticket price, around 5,200 to 6,300 KZT, while adult tickets run about 6,500 to 7,800 KZT. A 50% discount has been advertised on Tuesdays, so check the day’s price. Ask about age and height limits at the desk before you buy.
Rides and Play
A family entertainment centre inside the complex has a pony ride, a rope course, a trampoline, bumper cars, a tea-cup ride and soft play, along with bigger rides such as the Drop’n Twist tower and a spinning coaster. These rides are paid. An electric car ride around the grounds costs about 2,000 KZT and seats up to ten people, which suits grandparents and tired legs.
Evening on the Canal
The Parade of Boats runs nightly on the canal, usually around 20:00 to 21:00, and is free to watch from the banks. It retells the legend of Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek with boats on the water. Short canal boat rides are also available. Arrive early to find a spot at the railing, and keep young children back from the water’s edge.
Crafts and Yurts
The ethno-aul in the Azret Sultan reserve has yurts, craft workshops for carpets, felt, wood and pottery, an archery range and altybakan swings. Hours and prices are set on site, so ask at the reserve.
Eating and Sleeping
The Karavansaray Turkistan Family Hotel is the family-oriented stay in the complex’s hotel group, and the restaurants around the canals serve Kazakh food that children can usually share, such as plov and samsa. Cash tenge is handy at the bazaar.
Heat and Practical Limits
Summer afternoons reach 35 to 40 C, so schedule rides for the morning and the canal for the evening, and bring water and hats. Turkistan has no zoo and no water park, so outdoor play means the complex itself. Sauran has no shade at all and suits only older children. Carry your original passport for any visit that involves the old-town security checks.
