Things to Do in Turkistan
Two Precincts a Short Walk Apart
Turkistan is a compact city in southern Kazakhstan, and nearly everything worth a visit sits in two neighbouring areas. The old town holds the Azret Sultan reserve, built around the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Beside it, the Karavansaray complex, opened in April 2021, adds canals, shops and evening shows. One full day covers both, and a second day opens up Otrar, Sauran or Arystan Bab. Carry your original passport; entry to the mausoleum precinct involves an ID check and bag screening.
The Yasawi Mausoleum and Reserve
The mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (reference 1103, inscribed 2003), begun in 1389 and left unfinished in 1405. Since 10 June 2026 foreign visitors from outside the CIS pay 5,000 KZT, roughly US$10, and the one ticket also covers the Yasawi museum and the Rare Exhibits Hall. Opening hours are about 09:00 to 18:00, so confirm at the ticket office. The dome sits under a protective canopy while restoration continues, and parts of the interior may be closed. This is a living pilgrimage site, so dress modestly, keep your voice low and do not photograph people at prayer.
Elsewhere in the reserve you can visit the Eastern Bathhouse museum, built around 1580 to 1590 with nine rooms and underfloor heating channels. An ethno-aul next to the museum has yurts, craft workshops, an archery range and altybakan swings; ask at the reserve for its hours and prices.
Karavansaray After Dark
Entry to the complex is free. Stroll the canals and Traders’ and Craftsmen’s Street, then find a spot on the bank for the Parade of Boats, a nightly canal show based on the Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek legend. It usually runs around 20:00 to 21:00, depending on the season. Paid extras include canal boat rides, a family entertainment centre and the Altyn Samruk Flying Theatre, an egg-shaped hall with a 30-minute 8D “Flight over Kazakhstan” for up to 40 people. Adults pay about 6,500 to 7,800 KZT and children less, so check the day’s price.
Eating Out
At the bazaar look for tandyr samsa, plov and shubat, a fermented camel milk, along with kumys. Sit-down meals are on offer at Sandyq and Kerege inside the Karavansaray, and at Edem, Al-Fatih and Bayterek in town. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, while the bazaar and minibuses want cash tenge.
Heat, Seasons and Limits
July highs run 35 to 40 C and can reach 45 C, so plan outdoor sights for early morning or evening. April, May, September and October are the comfortable months. The Syr Darya is a lowland river regulated for irrigation, so there is no white-water rafting, and there is no skiing or canyon trekking near the city. Camel and pony rides around the mausoleum precinct are short, commercial rides rather than expeditions.
