Multi-Day Trips from Turkistan and Shymkent
Planning Around Turkistan
A longer stay lets you pair the old town with Otrar and Arystan Bab without a dawn start. Most multi-day plans use Turkistan itself, Shymkent or Almaty as a base. The pieces below can be mixed.
Two Days in Turkistan
Operators from Almaty use a simple two-day format. Day one covers the Azret Sultan precinct and the Karavansaray in the evening. Day two goes by car to Otrar and Arystan Bab, with Sauran or Ukasha Ata added if time allows. Done independently, the same plan needs a driver for day two.
Three Days with Otrar and Ukasha Ata
A private three-day tour covering Turkistan, Otrar and Ukasha Ata has been quoted at US$385 to US$1,050 per person in 2026, depending on group size. Check what each quote includes before you compare operators.
Shymkent and Turkistan Together
A second option is to stay in Shymkent and make Turkistan a day out. The trip is about 160 km, around 2 hours by minibus or shared car and about 3 to 4 hours by train. Sleeping in Turkistan instead lets you see the precinct in the morning and the evening canal show, with Shymkent on the return.
Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve
This reserve is about 90 to 100 km from Shymkent, with its office in Zhabagly village. Visits need a permit and a guide arranged through the reserve. From Turkistan it is an overnight trip, not a day trip, so place it on a Shymkent leg.
Extending into Uzbekistan
Travellers continuing along the Silk Road can go from Shymkent to Tashkent by train or road, then take the Afrosiyob high-speed train from Tashkent to Samarkand. That train runs inside Uzbekistan and does not serve Turkistan. Border and visa rules differ by passport, so check the Kazakh and Uzbek foreign ministry pages before you plan.
Getting to Turkistan
Hazrat Sultan International Airport (HSA) is about 21 km from the centre, with direct flights from Almaty and Astana plus a few seasonal international routes, so check current schedules. Overnight trains run from Almaty, so confirm the timetable and train type on the national railway site. There is no direct train from Astana.
Where to Stay
Lodging names that guides list include the Karavansaray Turkistan Hotel, its sister Family Hotel, Hampton by Hilton Turkistan and the Platinum Hotel, where a single room cost about 10,000 KZT in July 2026. Rixos Turkistan and Ramada by Wyndham also list rooms.
Seasons
April, May, September and October are the best months. July can reach 35 to 40 C, with spells up to 45 C. Carry your original passport for the check at the mausoleum gate.
