Walking Routes in Almaty
Almaty rewards slow walking in its flat central districts, where wide boulevards, shaded paths and small irrigation channels called aryks keep summer afternoons bearable. A good rule for getting your bearings is that south is uphill, toward the mountains. The walks below stay inside the city. Medeu lies about 15 km away in a gorge and belongs on a separate outing, not on a city stroll.
The Arbat and Zhibek Zholy
The Arbat is the pedestrian stretch of Zhibek Zholy Avenue, near the Zhibek Zholy metro station. Street musicians play, portrait artists set up easels, and cafes spill onto the pavement.
Tsoi statue on Tulebaev Street
A statue of Viktor Tsoi in the role of Moro stands on Tulebaev Street at the corner of Kabanbay Batyr Street. It marks the pedestrian avenue where the last scene of the 1988 film “Igla” (The Needle) was shot. The sculptor was Matvey Makushkin, and the statue was unveiled in 2018.
Panfilov Park loop
Panfilov Park makes the best single walk in town. Combine three stops in one loop:
- Zenkov Cathedral, a 56 m timber church from 1907 that is still in active use. Entry is free, so dress modestly.
- Memorial of Glory, with its eternal flame for the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. Keep the mood solemn.
- Ykylas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, at Zenkov Street 24a on the park’s eastern edge. Adults pay about 1,000 KZT, and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday.
Green Bazaar
Finish with food at the Green Bazaar, Zhibek Zholy Avenue 53 at Makatayev Street. Try kazy horse-meat sausage, kurt cheese balls and the Koryo-saram carrot salad called morkovcha. Pavilions have been listed as open from 08:00 to 19:00 Tuesday to Sunday, and the market is mostly closed on Monday, so confirm before a Monday walk. Pickpockets work the crowds.
Republic Square
Republic Square holds the Independence Monument, where the Golden Man, a Saka warrior, rides a winged snow leopard. The square is open air and free. It makes a good place to rest between stops.
Seasons and shoes
- Summer: Start early or after sunset. Aryk channels and shaded Soviet-era boulevards keep the streets cooler.
- Winter: Pavements ice over and icicles fall from roofs, so wear footwear with traction and avoid walking right beside buildings. Winter smog is heavy from November to February.
- Anytime: Prices here are in tenge (KZT), at roughly 470 to 490 to the US dollar in 2026, and a cashless Onay card, QR code or app pays for buses at 120 KZT.
Staying safe on foot
Violent theft has been reported at night near bars and clubs in expatriate areas of Almaty, so keep to busy streets late in the evening and use licensed taxis. Photography is restricted near military sites, border areas and airports. Almaty lies in an active seismic zone, and the number to call for emergencies in the mountains is 109 or 112.
