Guided Timurid Circuit in Shakhrisabz
Organised visits to Shakhrisabz almost always follow the same Timurid circuit, and knowing its stops makes it easy to compare offers. This page describes what a typical guided visit covers, what costs extra and what to ask before you pay.
The usual stops
A standard operator itinerary from Samarkand visits Ak-Saray, Dorut Tilavat, Dorus Saodat and the underground crypt behind it. Ak-Saray is a partial ruin, and visits there centre on the two surviving entrance pylons, about 38 m high, and the plaza around them, not on any interior. Dorut Tilavat is a tomb complex built around the grave of Sheikh Shamsiddin Kulol, Timur’s spiritual teacher, with the Kok Gumbaz mosque beside it. Dorus Saodat holds the tombs of Jahangir and Umar Shaykh.
The crypt was prepared for Timur, who is buried in Gur-e Amir in Samarkand. It is a plain chamber reached through a wooden door, with a marble sarcophagus under a monolithic gravestone.
Getting there and what a day tour costs
The drive from Samarkand is about two hours each way over the Takhtakaracha Pass, and many tours include a photo stop at a pass viewpoint. One operator sells a private day tour at about USD 105, with entry tickets extra. Tickets are sold per site, at around 40,000 UZS each (about USD 3), so a full circuit adds up. Price quotes differ between operators, so ask what the figure includes: car, driver, guide, entry tickets and lunch.
Since 27 March 2026 the Afrosiyob train also runs between Tashkent and Shakhrisabz on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, leaving Tashkent at 06:33 and returning at 16:24. Check eticket.railway.uz for the current timetable.
Adding a local guide on site
A guide at the monuments gives context the signs do not, such as who built each tomb and why Ak-Saray stands half-ruined. Agree the fee before you start and pay in cash. Dorut Tilavat and Dorus Saodat are places of prayer, so guides will ask groups to dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered, hair covered for women inside mosques and mausolea) and to keep quiet.
Short add-ons
- Chorsu covered bazaar and the bathhouse beside it, a short stop with a central dome about 21 m across.
- Amir Temur Museum in the 17th-century Chubin Madrasah, an indoor stop that costs around 30,000 UZS.
- An electric cart ride along the park axis between the monuments. Carts have run there since 2016, so ask on site whether they are running and what the fare is.
Booking tips
Winter tours depend on the pass. It can close after heavy snow or ice, so confirm the day before and ask what the operator does if the road shuts. Summer visits are best at the start or end of the day, since the paved axis between monuments has little shade. Tours from Samarkand can be compared on GetYourGuide and Viator . One operator’s one-day itinerary shows a typical stop list, and the tourism portal’s Dorus Saodat page covers the ensemble itself.
