Antwerp: Day Trips by What You Want
Rather than rank Antwerp’s day trips by distance, it helps to sort them by what you actually want from the day. All six leave from Antwerpen-Centraal on frequent direct trains, no car needed, fares in euros under the reformed 2025 structure. Pick the mood, then pick the train.
If you want canals
Two towns deliver the canal-and-guild-house postcard. Ghent (46 min to just over an hour, roughly EUR 9 to 14, verify) has the Gravensteen castle and the Van Eyck altarpiece with a working city’s real life around it. Bruges (1h25 to 1h35, roughly EUR 14 to 19, verify) is prettier and far more crowded. From Antwerp, Ghent wins on time and calm; save Bruges for a full day and ride early or late to dodge the coach groups.
If you want a capital
Brussels (45 to 48 min, roughly EUR 9 to 11, verify) is the half-day capital fix: the Grand-Place, the Atomium and the Magritte Museum, all doable there-and-back in an afternoon. Antwerp does not need Brussels as a gateway, so treat it as a headline add rather than an obligation.
If you want the sea
Ostend and the coast (1h34 to 1h45, roughly EUR 18 to 27, verify) are the beach-and-promenade day, with the Kusttram running the shore to quieter towns like De Haan. It is a good-weather trip only, roughly May to September; skip it for a grey winter beach.
If you want a quick hop
Mechelen (17 to 20 min, a few euros each way) is the low-commitment half-day: St Rumbold’s Cathedral, its carillon and a compact Gothic centre, back in Antwerp by afternoon. It is the easiest add on the whole list.
If you want to cross a border
Lille in France (1h30 to 2h, from about EUR 20, verify) is the offbeat one, a real international crossing so bring a passport or EU ID. Go for its Flemish-French character and huge Sunday flea market; otherwise it ranks below every Belgian option here.
Booking discipline
None of these need scarce timed tickets from Antwerp; the only real trade-off is journey time. Buy the evening before, take the weekend or under-26 discount where it applies, and start early on the long ones.
