Antwerp: Green Spaces and Parks

Antwerp’s nature is urban nature: the Scheldt, a river beach across the water, and a set of generous parks, all of them free and reachable on foot or a short tram ride. If the museums and cobbles start to close in, here is where locals go to breathe, grouped by what you are after.

Water: the Scheldt and the left bank

The river is the headline. The open embankment past Het Steen gives the widest sky in the city, and crossing to the left bank puts you on Sint-Anna beach, a genuine stretch of river sand with the old town laid out across the water. The Galgenweel lake sits just behind it for a loop. Cross on the free Sint-Anna tunnel or the free 24/7 ferry, since the tram tunnel under the river is closed until roughly March 2027.

The big parks

Three parks carry the city’s green weight. Stadspark, near the centre, is the quick fix, a compact landscaped park around a pond. Rivierenhof, east in Deurne, is the large one, with room for a real wander among trees, water and lawns, plus a summer open-air theatre. Both are free and busy with locals whenever the sun is out.

South of the centre, Middelheim is an open-air sculpture museum set across free parkland, so a walk there comes with modern and contemporary art among the trees. It is the most distinctive of Antwerp’s green spaces, a garden and a museum at once, with no ticket to enter.

When to go and what to bring

The reliable weather window runs roughly May to September, though the parks stay open and pleasant year-round between showers; this is maritime weather, so carry a layer and something for rain any month. Everything here is flat and surfaced, so no special gear is needed. A single De Lijn ticket runs about EUR 3 for 60 minutes, enough to reach Rivierenhof or Middelheim and get back.

Pairing green with sights

Because these spots ring the centre rather than sitting in it, they slot neatly onto a sightseeing day: the river walk after the Grote Markt, Middelheim on the way to or from Het Zuid, Rivierenhof as a half-day when you want out of the crowds entirely.
