Antwerp: Belgium Nature Escapes
If Antwerp’s parks are not enough, the wider region trades cobbles for open country within a day of the city, and you can reach almost all of it car-free. These are landscapes to take in as much as to hike, grouped by the kind of scenery you are after. Prices are in euros; verify current transport before you set out.
Heath and heather
North of the city, the Kalmthoutse Heide is a wide cross-border heathland of purple heather, sand and pine straddling the Dutch frontier. It is the region’s signature open landscape, at its most photogenic in late summer when the heather colours, and it is an easy, flat day out with marked loops for walking or cycling.
Dunes and the North Sea
The Belgian coast is the big-sky escape: wide beaches backed by protected dune belts around Ostend, 1h34 to 1h45 by train, with the Kusttram running the shore so you can hop between resort towns and quieter stretches. It is a warm-season pick, roughly May to September, when the sea air and light are the whole point.
Forest, heath and quarry lakes
For woodland and water, the Hoge Kempen in Limburg is Belgium’s only national park, pine forest and heath dotted with old quarry lakes turned turquoise. It is the furthest of these from Antwerp and needs a connection, so plan a full day and check current rail-and-bus access first.
The river itself
Closer to home, the Scheldt is its own nature escape. The paid De Lijn Waterbus runs the river between Lillo and Hemiksem, carrying you past the vast port, the estuary polders and the flat river landscape that shaped the city. It is a different way to see the region, from the water rather than a trail, and a good low-effort half-day when the weather is kind. Check the current Waterbus timetable and stops before you go, since sailings are seasonal and thin out well outside the summer months.
Making it work from Antwerp
All of these leave from Antwerpen-Centraal or the riverside, unaffected by the in-city tram-tunnel closure that runs until roughly March 2027. Under the reformed 2025 rail fares, weekend and under-26 tickets cut the cost, so check the cheaper option before booking and start early to fit a full escape into one day.
