Antwerp: Where to Stay by Area
Antwerp is compact enough that no central choice is wrong, but the four main areas trade off in ways worth knowing. Where you sleep mostly comes down to one question: do you want the train or the sights on your doorstep? Distances are short either way, so this is about convenience and character rather than getting stranded. Here is how the four districts compare for a 2 to 4 day city stay, and who each one suits best.
Near Centraal and De Keyserlei
Hotels cluster tightly around Antwerpen-Centraal, a 2 to 7 minute walk, mostly budget-to-midrange chains. This is the pick if you are arriving by train, day-tripping out, or watching the budget. One honest caveat: the area directly north and northeast of the station (De Keyserlei, Kievitwijk) sees some drug and petty-crime activity after dark, so stick to the lit main streets at night. The station itself needs standard pickpocket caution.
The historic centre
Around the Grote Markt and the cathedral, you trade a short tram or 20-minute walk to the station for being steps from nearly every sight. It is the most atmospheric base, lively and safe well into the evening, and the easiest for a first visit built around the old town. Rooms here skew a little pricier for the location.
Het Zuid
The South is the arty, upscale district: design shops, good restaurants and the reopened KMSKA, with a quieter, more local feel than the centre. It suits travellers who want evening dining and galleries over being on top of the headline sights, a short tram ride out.
Eilandje
The redeveloped dockland north of the centre puts you by the waterfront, the MAS and the Red Star Line Museum, with newer hotels and a calmer, spacious feel. It is a good pick for a second visit or anyone who prefers the river to the crowds.
Booking and getting around
Both the station and the old town are reasonable defaults; pick by whether trains or sights matter more to your trip.
