Antwerp: Overlooked Belgium Stops
Based in Antwerp, you can skip the day trips everyone else queues for and reach quieter ones on the same frequent trains. Belgium’s most crowded set-piece is Bruges at midday; the stops below trade a little fame for a lot more room. All fares are in euros and worth checking under the reformed 2025 rail structure before you go.
Ghent, the calmer canal town
Ghent gets treated as Bruges’ understudy, which is exactly why it works. At 46 minutes to just over an hour out, it has the canals, the Gravensteen castle and the Van Eyck altarpiece in St Bavo’s, but it is a working university city with real local life instead of coach-tour churn. For anyone based in Antwerp, it is the better canal day than Bruges on both crowds and travel time.
Mechelen, the 17-minute overlook
Most Antwerp guides jump straight to Brussels or Bruges and never mention Mechelen, the shortest hop on the map at 17 to 20 minutes. St Rumbold’s Cathedral, its carillon and a compact Gothic centre make an easy half-day with no queues and a train home whenever you please.
De Haan, the belle-epoque coast
On a coast day, ride past the obvious Ostend seafront to De Haan, a preserved belle-epoque resort of low villas reached by the Kusttram that runs the length of the Belgian shore. It is a calmer, more characterful stretch of coast, best between roughly May and September; skip it for a grey winter beach walk.
Kalmthoutse Heide, the border heath
For quiet nature rather than another old town, the Kalmthoutse Heide is a broad cross-border heathland north of Antwerp, laced with walking and cycling trails through purple heather and pine, straddling the Dutch frontier. It is an easy regional escape and a complete change of pace from cobbles and canals.
Lille’s Sunday flea market
The offbeat cross-border pick is Lille in France, 1h30 to 2h out with a real border crossing, so bring a passport or EU ID. Its reputation rests on the huge Sunday braderie flea market and a Flemish-French character you will not find on the Belgian side; a lower priority than the trips above, but a genuine one if bargain-hunting is the point of your day.
