Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything, including day trips outside the city. Favor small local operators, and treat this as for if and when a trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.
Seven days is our 6-day itinerary with a seventh day at Hlawga National Park, the closest thing to a nature day trip Yangon actually has, not a hike, a managed wildlife park. Days one through six are unchanged. If seven days feels like too much, our 5-day itinerary drops the Circular Railway day and Hlawga.

Day 1
Morning: Sule Pagoda and the downtown colonial walk, the old Secretariat (access uncertain since the coup), Pansodan Street.
Afternoon: Bogyoke Aung San Market, skip any steered gem-shop stop. Mohinga for lunch.
Evening: Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset into lit night, shoes and socks off, fee historically around 10,000-15,000 kyat.
Day 2
Morning: Chaukhtatgyi’s reclining Buddha paired with the seated Ngahtatgyi Buddha nearby.
Afternoon: Botataung Pagoda’s mirrored, walk-through interior. Lahpet thoke for lunch.
Evening: Kandawgyi Lake for the Karaweik-and-Shwedagon photo, then a real tea shop.
Day 3
Full day: Bago, about 91km and 2 hours out. Watch for the fake bus-stop scam. Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha, Kanbawzathadi Palace, and Kyaikpun’s four back-to-back Buddhas.
Day 4
Full day: Thanlyin (Syriam) across the Thanlyin Bridge, Kyaik Khauk Pagoda, and the Yele Paya’s short boat crossing near Kyauktan, verify current access and price.
Day 5
Full day: Twante’s pottery workshops, reached by ferry across the 1881 Twante Canal, plus Shwesandaw Pagoda.
Day 6
Morning: The Yangon Circular Railway, roughly three hours if the full loop is running, ask locally first.
Afternoon: Chinatown and Little India, a slow wander.
Evening: 19th Street’s open-air barbecue stalls.
Day 7
Morning: Hlawga National Park, about 35km from downtown, is a managed wildlife park, not a hike, safari-bus routes, short jungle-trail walks, boating, and birdwatching, home to eld’s deer, macaques, and pythons among roughly 21 mammal and 145 bird species recorded.
Afternoon: Back downtown for anything you’ve missed, the Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue (Myanmar’s only synagogue, active since the 1890s, a knock-and-ask visit) is worth the detour if you haven’t already made it.
Evening: A last tea shop, and reconfirm your onward flight. International connections through Yangon have thinned since 2021, mostly via Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, and schedules can shift with little warning.
Book these before you go
- Browse a Hlawga wildlife park day trip with a small local operator for day seven
- Browse a Bago day trip for day three
- Check rates on Booking.com for a downtown base across all seven days
Check the current official travel advisory before booking any of these, and favor local independent operators over state-linked ones. The Yangon Heritage Trust is worth checking on downtown restoration status too.
For the cash and etiquette basics behind all seven days, see our Yangon travel tips , and for what nature near Yangon honestly is beyond Hlawga, our Yangon nature spots guide. The concrete tip: with seven days on the table, build in one genuinely unscheduled morning, this itinerary works better slower than it does fully booked.
