Yangon 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything, including the overland route to Bago below. Favor small local operators, and treat this as for if and when a trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.
Three days covers the city core plus one real day trip. Days one and two are our 2-day itinerary exactly, downtown and Shwedagon, then the second-tier pagodas and Kandawgyi. Day three adds Bago. Going longer, our 4-day itinerary nests this and adds one more day.

Day 1
Morning: Sule Pagoda and the downtown colonial walk, City Hall, the old Secretariat (assassination site of Aung San in 1947, access uncertain since the coup, viewable from outside), Pansodan Street’s galleries and book stalls. The Yangon Heritage Trust tracks which of these buildings are under active restoration, worth a check before you plan your route around any one of them.
Afternoon: Bogyoke Aung San Market for textiles and handicrafts, skip any steered gem-shop stop. Mohinga for lunch from a stall with a local line.
Evening: Shwedagon Pagoda for sunset into lit night, shoes and socks off, foreigner fee historically around 10,000-15,000 kyat. Dinner nearby.
Day 2
Morning: Chaukhtatgyi’s reclining Buddha (66 meters, glass eyes) paired with the seated Ngahtatgyi Buddha nearby.
Afternoon: Botataung Pagoda’s mirrored, walk-through gold-leaf interior, a genuinely different experience from the open platforms elsewhere. Lahpet thoke for lunch.
Evening: Kandawgyi Lake for the Karaweik-and-Shwedagon photo (skip eating at the Karaweik itself, it’s a tour-group buffet), then a real tea shop.
Day 3
Full day: Bago sits about 91km and roughly 2 hours from Yangon, by hourly bus from Aung Mingalar terminal (around 3,000 kyat, verify), train, or taxi at roughly $40-50 round trip. One known scam on some bus routes: a fake “the city’s inaccessible from here” stop about 4km out to upsell a taxi, stay on the bus.
Once there: Shwemawdaw Pagoda, Myanmar’s tallest stupa at roughly 114 meters, actually taller than Shwedagon; the 994 CE Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha, 55 meters and considerably less crowded than its Yangon counterpart; the reconstructed Kanbawzathadi Palace; and Kyaikpun, four Buddha images seated back to back facing the cardinal directions. Head back to Yangon for a final dinner.
