Mandalay 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Before you plan anything: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, with an active civil war and a genuine conflict zone in the Sagaing Region directly across the river from Mandalay; most governments currently advise against all travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s current guidance first. The 28 March 2025 earthquake struck essentially under this exact area, badly damaging the Royal Palace, Mahamuni Pagoda, and the ancient capitals; what’s rebuilt versus still closed in 2026 is genuinely unclear, so verify each site before relying on it. Some tourism spending here reaches the military, so favour small independent local operators if you go, and skipping the trip is just as defensible. What follows describes Mandalay for if and when it’s safe to visit, or as these places stood before the quake.
Seven days is our 6-day itinerary , the full city, ancient-capitals, Mingun, and Pyin Oo Lwin core plus a slower Amarapura revisit, with a genuinely flexible final day built in rather than a padded extra sight.

Book these before you go
- A Mandalay heritage and crafts tour : check the current official travel advisory before booking, and favour small local independent operators over larger package sellers.
- A U Bein sunset or ancient-cities tour, if current access allows : confirm with the operator directly what’s actually reachable post-quake before paying.
- A central Mandalay hotel : confirm by message that the specific property is open and taking cash before you arrive.
Day 1: Mandalay city core
Morning: Mahamuni Pagoda, the roughly 4:30-5am face-washing ritual; inner sanctum and gold-leafing men-only. Confirmed 2025 structural damage, check current access.
Midday: Kuthodaw Pagoda’s 729 marble slabs, then Shwenandaw Monastery. The Royal Palace moat for a photo, not guaranteed entry; active military zone, further quake damage to gates and walls.
Afternoon: A gold-leaf or carving workshop, then Zegyo Market.
Evening: Mandalay Hill sunset, roughly 230m up covered stairways.
Day 2: the ancient capitals, with real caveats
Morning: Amarapura’s U Bein Bridge, 2025 status genuinely unverified. Mahagandhayon Monastery’s late-morning alms procession, if still running.
Afternoon: Inwa (Ava), by boat then horse cart, vehicle bridge collapsed. Hardest-hit ancient capital, roughly 75% of structures damaged, Maha Aungmye Bonzan reported destroyed.
Late afternoon: Sagaing, epicenter zone, roughly 90% of structures reportedly destroyed, hill-pagoda status unconfirmed. Neither site UNESCO-listed; Myanmar’s are Bagan and the Pyu Ancient Cities elsewhere (see whc.unesco.org ).
Day 3: Mingun by boat
Morning: The roughly hour-long boat trip to Mingun. Mingun Pahtodawgyi’s unfinished stupa, already cracked by an 1839 quake, additional 2025 damage unverified, as is the Mingun Bell’s status. Hsinbyume Pagoda is a confirmed loss, reported largely destroyed.
Afternoon: Free time, an Irrawaddy sunset boat, a slower Zegyo Market pass, or a tea shop and rest.
Day 4: Pyin Oo Lwin, the genuinely different day
Morning: The trip out, roughly 1.5-2 hours by road or about 4 hours by scenic train, runs 7-10°C cooler.
Midday: The National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens, roughly 177 hectares and 500-plus tree species.
Afternoon: Anisakan Falls, roughly 122m, then the 1936 Purcell Clock Tower.
Day 5: the corners a first pass skips
Morning: The jade market around 87th Street, entry roughly a couple thousand kyat to browse; Myanmar’s jade trade is genuinely entangled with military and conflict financing and carries a deadly landslide record at the mining end, treat any serious purchase as a decision that deserves research first.
Afternoon: The quieter Irrawaddy waterfront away from the main jetty. The Moustache Brothers’ show, if it still runs given the post-2021 climate, is worth an evening for its notable history alone.
Day 6: Amarapura in daylight, and slowing down
Morning: Return to Amarapura in daylight, U Bein Bridge and Taungthaman Lake look genuinely different in morning light, less crowded and better for the bridge’s structure itself.
Midday: A deeper look at one craft specialty you skipped on day 1, kalaga tapestry or bronze casting, generally free to watch.
Afternoon: A genuinely unscheduled afternoon, rest, a last tea shop, or whatever’s actually needed by day 6.
Day 7: your call, then the airport
Morning: This is the day to fix whatever got rushed. Most people go back to Inwa for a slower look, or finally sit down at a tea shop for a proper hour instead of a quick pass through. Pick one, don’t try to cram three.
Afternoon: A last market run at Zegyo, and packing. Budget roughly an hour for the transfer to Mandalay International Airport, about 35km south in Tada-U, and reconfirm your flight the day before rather than trusting the original booking, schedules here have been less predictable amid the broader instability.
Is a full week too much time in Mandalay?
It’s more than the sights alone need, but not more than the trip needs once you count the ancient capitals, Mingun, and Pyin Oo Lwin as full days each. The genuinely flexible day 7 is the point, not a filler sight, it’s there so nothing earlier in the week has to be rushed just to fit a fixed schedule.

One concrete move: don’t fill day 7 in advance, leave it open until day 6 evening and then decide, the whole value of this last day is that it responds to how the week actually went.
