Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything, including day trips outside the city. Favor small local operators, and treat this as for if and when a trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.
Six days is our 5-day itinerary with a sixth day dedicated to the Circular Railway and Chinatown properly, rather than squeezed into an afternoon. Days one through five are unchanged. Our 7-day itinerary nests this and adds Hlawga National Park.

Day 1
Morning: Sule Pagoda and the downtown colonial walk, the old Secretariat (access uncertain since the coup), Pansodan Street.
Afternoon: Bogyoke Aung San Market, skip any steered gem-shop stop. Mohinga for lunch.
Evening: Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset into lit night, shoes and socks off, fee historically around 10,000-15,000 kyat.
Day 2
Morning: Chaukhtatgyi’s reclining Buddha paired with the seated Ngahtatgyi Buddha nearby.
Afternoon: Botataung Pagoda’s mirrored, walk-through interior. Lahpet thoke for lunch.
Evening: Kandawgyi Lake for the Karaweik-and-Shwedagon photo, then a real tea shop.
Day 3
Full day: Bago, about 91km and 2 hours out. Watch for the fake bus-stop scam. Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha, Kanbawzathadi Palace, and Kyaikpun’s four back-to-back Buddhas.
Day 4
Full day: Thanlyin (Syriam) across the Thanlyin Bridge, Kyaik Khauk Pagoda, and the Yele Paya’s short boat crossing near Kyauktan, verify current access and price.
Day 5
Full day: Twante’s pottery workshops, reached by ferry across the 1881 Twante Canal, plus Shwesandaw Pagoda.
Day 6
Morning: Board the Yangon Circular Railway at Central Station. Ask locally whether the full roughly three-hour loop is running before you commit the whole morning, partial closures for repairs have been reported. Get off wherever looks interesting; vendors board at every stop with produce and snacks.
Afternoon: Chinatown’s grid of streets, Little India nearby for a change of cuisine, and a slow wander rather than a checklist.
Evening: 19th Street’s open-air barbecue stalls, the genuine nightlife food street here, come hungry.
Book these before you go
- Browse a Circular Train and Chinatown tour with a small local operator for day six
- Browse a Bago day trip for day three
- Check rates on Booking.com for a downtown base across all six days
Check the current official travel advisory before booking any of these, and favor local independent operators over state-linked ones. The Yangon Heritage Trust is worth checking on downtown restoration status too.
For the cash and etiquette basics behind all six days, see our Yangon travel tips , and for the food specifics on day six, our best places to eat in Yangon guide. The concrete tip: don’t book the Circular Railway as a fixed morning slot, confirm the loop’s status the day before, not weeks out.
