Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything, including day trips outside the city. Favor small local operators, and treat this as for if and when a trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.
Four days is our 3-day itinerary with one more day trip added. Days one through three are unchanged, downtown and Shwedagon, then pagodas and Kandawgyi, then Bago. Day four goes east across the river to Thanlyin. If you want even more, the 5-day itinerary nests this and adds Twante.
Quick reference
| Day | Focus | Key stop |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Downtown + Shwedagon | Shwedagon at sunset |
| 2 | Pagodas + Kandawgyi | Botataung’s walk-through interior |
| 3 | Bago day trip | Shwemawdaw, taller than Shwedagon |
| 4 | Thanlyin day trip | Yele Paya’s river crossing |
Day 1
Morning: Sule Pagoda and the downtown colonial walk, City Hall, the old Secretariat (access uncertain since the coup, worth seeing from outside), Pansodan Street’s galleries and book stalls. The Yangon Heritage Trust is a useful check on which of these buildings are currently under restoration.
Afternoon: Bogyoke Aung San Market for textiles and handicrafts, skip any steered gem-shop stop. Mohinga for lunch.
Evening: Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset into lit night, shoes and socks off, fee historically around 10,000-15,000 kyat.
Day 2
Morning: Chaukhtatgyi’s reclining Buddha paired with the seated Ngahtatgyi Buddha nearby.
Afternoon: Botataung Pagoda’s mirrored, walk-through interior. Lahpet thoke for lunch.
Evening: Kandawgyi Lake for the Karaweik-and-Shwedagon photo, skip eating at the Karaweik itself, then a real tea shop.
Day 3
Full day: Bago, about 91km and 2 hours out (bus, train, or taxi, verify current fares). Watch for the fake “inaccessible” bus stop scam about 4km short of town, stay aboard. Shwemawdaw Pagoda (Myanmar’s tallest stupa), the 994 CE Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha, the reconstructed Kanbawzathadi Palace, and Kyaikpun’s four back-to-back Buddhas.
Day 4
Morning: Cross the Yangon River via the Thanlyin Bridge to Thanlyin (Syriam), a former Portuguese trading post from around 1603 under Filipe de Brito. Kyaik Khauk Pagoda sits on a hilltop here.
Afternoon: The Yele Paya, a “floating pagoda” on a mid-river island near Kyauktan, reached by a short boat crossing, verify current access and price before you commit, it’s a niche stop and details are thin.
Evening: Back into downtown Yangon for a final proper Burmese curry dinner, and a last tea shop stop if you haven’t had enough by now.
Book these before you go
- Browse a Thanlyin day trip with a small local operator for day four
- Browse a Bago day trip for day three
- Check rates on Booking.com for a downtown base across all four days
Check the current official travel advisory before booking any of these, and favor local independent operators over state-linked ones.
For the cash and etiquette basics that apply across all four days, see our Yangon travel tips . The concrete tip: don’t try to combine Thanlyin with Bago in one long day, the Yele Paya crossing has its own schedule and rushing it defeats the point of going.
