Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything. Search “hiking areas Yangon” and you’ll find pages listing hills, viewpoints, and “trails” around the city. Skip them. Yangon sits in the flat Ayeyarwady delta, and there is no real hiking or mountain terrain in or near the city. Here’s the honest version.
Why there’s nothing to hike here
Yangon’s entire surrounding landscape is delta plain, low, flat, riverine. There’s no ridge, no elevation gain, no forest trail network within reach of the city. A “hill walk” here means a few flights of steps at a pagoda platform, not a hike in any real sense.
What actually exists instead
The closest thing to a walk in nature is Hlawga National Park, about 35km from downtown, a managed wildlife park with short jungle-trail walks, a safari-bus route, boating, and birdwatching, home to eld’s deer, macaques, and pythons among roughly 21 mammal and 145 bird species recorded. It’s a wildlife-park outing, not a hike, and it’s worth treating it as exactly that so you’re not disappointed.

Where real trekking actually is
Kalaw and the wider Shan hills are Myanmar’s genuine trekking country, multi-day treks through hill-tribe villages and pine forest at real elevation. That’s a separate trip, not a Yangon day trip, and given the current situation, access and safety there need their own current check well beyond what applies to Yangon itself.
