Yangon 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything, including day trips outside the city. Favor small local operators, and treat this as for if and when a trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.

Five days is our 4-day itinerary with a fifth day added for Twante’s pottery town. Days one through four are unchanged: downtown and Shwedagon, pagodas and Kandawgyi, Bago, then Thanlyin. Going longer still, our 6-day itinerary nests this and adds the Circular Railway as its own full day.

Day 1

Morning: Sule Pagoda and the downtown colonial walk, City Hall, the old Secretariat (access uncertain since the coup), Pansodan Street’s galleries and book stalls.

Afternoon: Bogyoke Aung San Market for textiles and handicrafts, skip any steered gem-shop stop. Mohinga for lunch.

Evening: Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset into lit night, shoes and socks off, fee historically around 10,000-15,000 kyat.

Day 2

Morning: Chaukhtatgyi’s reclining Buddha paired with the seated Ngahtatgyi Buddha nearby.

Afternoon: Botataung Pagoda’s mirrored, walk-through interior. Lahpet thoke for lunch.

Evening: Kandawgyi Lake for the Karaweik-and-Shwedagon photo, then a real tea shop.

Day 3

Full day: Bago, about 91km and 2 hours out. Watch for the fake bus-stop scam short of town. Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the 994 CE Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha, the reconstructed Kanbawzathadi Palace, and Kyaikpun’s four back-to-back Buddhas.

Day 4

Full day: Cross the Thanlyin Bridge to Thanlyin (Syriam), the former Portuguese trading post of Filipe de Brito, and Kyaik Khauk Pagoda on its hilltop. The Yele Paya, a mid-river “floating pagoda” near Kyauktan, needs a short boat crossing, verify current access and price.

Day 5

Morning: Ferry across the 1881 Twante Canal (or the road bridge) to Twante, a delta town where traditional Myanmar ceramics are still hand-thrown. Look for the older, established workshops rather than the gift stalls closest to the drop-off point.

Afternoon: Shwesandaw Pagoda, Twante’s main religious stop, is a quick add if the pottery workshops haven’t filled your afternoon already.

Evening: Back to Yangon for a last dinner, and a tea shop stop if you’ve somehow still not had enough.
