Santorini 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Seven days is our 6-day plan plus a genuine flex day, not a seventh day of caldera photos at full intensity. A full week here is plenty; use the extra day for a second Cyclades island or simply nothing at all.
Book these before you go:
- A Fira or Imerovigli caldera-view room : 7 nights in peak season means booking months out
- The caldera volcano and hot-springs boat tour : the €5 Nea Kameni landing fee is cash-only
- Akrotiri skip-the-line tickets : flat €20 year-round since April 2025
- A volcanic wine tour : small-group sunset tastings sell out first
| Day | Focus | Travel/ferry time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fira, the cable car, an early Oia sunset | Cable car ~5 min; Fira-Oia bus/ATV ~30 min |
| 2 | Caldera volcano and hot-springs boat, a black-sand beach | Boat tour ~3h round trip |
| 3 | Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, a wine tasting | Bus/ATV 20-30 min between sites |
| 4 | Pyrgos, Megalochori, Red Beach (viewed, not walked) | Bus/ATV 20-40 min between villages |
| 5 | Thirassia day trip | Ferry from Athinios ~20-30 min each way |
| 6 | The Fira-Oia caldera rim hike | ~10km on foot, 4-5h |
| 7 | Flex day, optional Ios or Naxos ferry, departure | Ios ferry 20 min-1h20 if you go |
Day 1: Fira, the cable car, and an early Oia sunset
Cable car down to the Old Port (€10, not the donkeys), Oia in the early afternoon ahead of the sunset crowd, dinner at Ammoudi Bay.
Day 2: The caldera volcano and hot springs by boat
A three-hour boat tour to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, plus a €5 cash-only landing fee. Afternoon at Kamari or Perissa.
Day 3: Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, and a wine tasting
Akrotiri (€20) and Ancient Thera (€10), then a small-group wine tasting across three volcanic vineyards.
Day 4: Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Red Beach from a safe distance
A hilltop village, a cheaper inland taverna town, and Red Beach seen from a boat rather than its unstable path.
Day 5: Thirassia, the caldera’s quiet side
A short ferry from Athinios to a genuinely quiet island with caldera views from the opposite side and lunch in Manolas.
Day 6: The Fira-Oia caldera rim hike
The full 10km trail past Imerovigli and Skaros Rock, 4-5 hours realistically, ending in Oia or turning back for a second sunset from Skaros Rock instead.
Day 7: A real flex day, or one more Cyclades island
Keep this morning genuinely empty. Revisit whichever village won you over this week, get a proper long lunch instead of another sightseeing stop, or use the day for a second Cyclades hop if you still have the energy: Ios is a fast, easy ferry (20 minutes to 1 hour 20, up to 7 crossings a day, fares from about €6.50) with a younger, nightlife-driven vibe, while Naxos runs longer (1 hour 5 to 2 hours 45, fares from about €31.50) and rewards an overnight far more than a rushed single day.
What do you do with a 7th day in Santorini? Whatever isn’t a museum or a boat ticket. By day seven, the caldera views have been seen, the volcano’s been climbed, and the honest move is a slow morning, a favorite taverna revisited, or a short island hop rather than manufacturing a new headline activity out of exhaustion.
Is Ios or Naxos the better day trip? Ios, if it has to be a same-day round trip; the crossing is short enough that you’re not burning the whole day in transit. Naxos is the better island on paper, bigger and more varied, but its longer crossing makes it a poor fit for a single day squeezed onto the end of a week that’s already full.
Before you go
Give yourself real buffer time getting to the airport or Athinios port; ferry departures especially run tight in peak season, and a missed sailing can mean a genuinely long wait for the next one.
