Athens 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Athens 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Five days is the same spine as the 4 day plan, plus a full day actually spent in Koukaki and Kolonaki instead of just sleeping and eating there between sights. The Acropolis and its museum, the Agora and Anafiotika, the National Archaeological Museum and Monastiraki, Syntagma and Lycabettus, then a slower fifth day. Tighter schedule? See the 4 day version . Have more time? The 6 day plan adds another neighborhood on top of this.
Book these before you go
- Acropolis timed ticket via hhticket.gr : book up to 60 days ahead; peak-season slots sell out 5 to 7 days out.
- Skip-the-line Acropolis and Parthenon tour : a fixed slot beats gambling on same-day availability in summer.
- Koukaki hotel rates : the neighborhood you will actually spend a full day in, book there first.
- Athens food and neighborhood tour : worth it on Day 5 if you want taverna names, not guesses.
The 5 days at a glance
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Acropolis, Parthenon, Acropolis Museum |
| Day 2 | Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Plaka, Anafiotika |
| Day 3 | National Archaeological Museum, Monastiraki, Psyrri |
| Day 4 | Syntagma, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Lycabettus |
| Day 5 | Koukaki, Panathenaic Stadium, Kolonaki |
Day 1: The Acropolis, done at the right hour
Book the 8am slot through hhticket.gr, especially in June through August, since peak slots vanish five to seven days out. Entry is 30 EUR flat, timed, capped at roughly 20,000 visitors a day. Go straight to the Acropolis Museum after: 20 EUR flat, a separate ticket, worth the full two hours it deserves.
Day 2: Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Plaka, Anafiotika
Morning at the Ancient Agora, 8 EUR in summer, 4 in winter, no timed slots required. The Temple of Hephaestus here is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple standing anywhere. Push past Plaka’s overpriced main lanes into Anafiotika, fewer than fifty whitewashed houses built overnight in the 1840s, genuinely quiet. Dinner in Psyrri if you want noise, Koukaki if you do not.
Day 3: National Archaeological Museum, Monastiraki, Psyrri
Get to the National Archaeological Museum early. Twenty euros flat, worth every minute of two hours: Mycenaean gold masks, the Antikythera Mechanism. Lunch at Varvakios market on Athinas Street, running since 1886. Spend the afternoon at Monastiraki’s flea market, then head to Psyrri for dinner.
Day 4: Syntagma, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Lycabettus
Time your morning at Syntagma Square for the changing of the guard, longer on Sunday. The Temple of Olympian Zeus, 8 EUR full price, is a five-minute walk away. In the evening, walk or take the funicular up Mount Lycabettus, roughly 7 to 10 EUR one-way, for sunset over the lit Acropolis. Dinner in Kolonaki at the hill’s base.
Day 5: Koukaki, Panathenaic Stadium, Kolonaki
Spend the morning actually in Koukaki instead of just sleeping there: good coffee on Falirou Street, quiet residential lanes, none of Plaka’s souvenir saturation. The Panathenaic Stadium, the all-marble venue built for the first modern Olympics in 1896, is a quick, genuinely worthwhile stop, roughly 10 EUR, not an all-morning event. Spend the afternoon in Kolonaki, upscale and boutique-heavy at the foot of Lycabettus, a useful contrast if Psyrri has been your default every other evening.
Is 5 days too long for just Athens?
Not if you actually use the extra day rather than padding it with a repeat museum visit. Everything above sits inside a single 1.20 EUR metro fare zone , so the extra day costs planning time, not transit money. Day 5 here is a neighborhood day, not a sightseeing day, and it is the difference between having seen Athens and having spent time in it. If you would rather use that day for an island or a coastal day trip instead, that is the Athens-to-Greece gateway , a different itinerary entirely.
What should you skip if you only have 5 days?
The Museum of Cycladic Art, the Benaki, Exarcheia and Gazi, all genuinely good, all better suited to a 6 or 7 day trip. Cutting them here is not a loss; it is the trade that keeps five days from turning into a checklist sprint.
Book the Acropolis slot the same day you book your flights. Everything across these five days builds around that single reservation.
