Santorini 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Six days is our 5-day plan plus one properly active day: the full Fira-to-Oia caldera rim trail on foot, the same route the buses and ATVs cover in 30 minutes, done at walking pace instead.
Book these before you go:
- A Fira or Imerovigli caldera-view room : 6 nights in peak season means booking months out
- The caldera volcano and hot-springs boat tour : the €5 Nea Kameni landing fee is cash-only
- Akrotiri skip-the-line tickets : flat €20 year-round since April 2025
- A volcanic wine tour : small-group sunset tastings sell out first
| Day | Focus | Travel/ferry time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fira, the cable car, an early Oia sunset | Cable car ~5 min; Fira-Oia bus/ATV ~30 min |
| 2 | Caldera volcano and hot-springs boat, a black-sand beach | Boat tour ~3h round trip |
| 3 | Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, a wine tasting | Bus/ATV 20-30 min between sites |
| 4 | Pyrgos, Megalochori, Red Beach (viewed, not walked) | Bus/ATV 20-40 min between villages |
| 5 | Thirassia day trip | Ferry from Athinios ~20-30 min each way |
| 6 | The Fira-Oia caldera rim hike | ~10km on foot, 4-5h |
Day 1: Fira, the cable car, and an early Oia sunset
Cable car down to the Old Port (€10, not the donkeys), then Oia in the early afternoon ahead of the sunset crowd. Dinner at Ammoudi Bay.
Day 2: The caldera volcano and hot springs by boat
A three-hour boat tour to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, €15-65 basic plus a €5 cash-only landing fee. Afternoon at Kamari or Perissa.
Day 3: Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, and a wine tasting
Akrotiri (€20) and Ancient Thera (€10), then a small-group wine tasting, about €150 a person, across three volcanic vineyards.
Day 4: Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Red Beach from a safe distance
A hilltop village, a cheaper inland taverna town, and Red Beach seen from a boat rather than its unstable, periodically-closed path.
Day 5: Thirassia, the caldera’s quiet side
A short ferry from Athinios (20-30 minutes) to a genuinely quiet island formed by the same eruption, with caldera views from the opposite side and lunch in Manolas village.
Day 6: The Fira-Oia caldera rim hike
The full trail runs roughly 10-10.5km, through Firostefani and Imerovigli (the route’s high point at about 350m) before dropping into Oia. Budget 4-5 hours with photo stops and a break, more like 2.5-3.5 hours if you walk briskly with none. The first half, Fira to Imerovigli, is mostly paved and easy; the second half is rougher, loose volcanic rock and steeper drops with no shade, and it’s where most people underestimate the time and effort required. A detour to Skaros Rock near Imerovigli adds at least an hour and doubles as the best low-crowd sunset alternative on the whole island.
Is the Fira-Oia hike worth doing? Yes, for anyone reasonably fit and hydrated, and it’s a genuinely different way to see the same coastline you’ve been riding past all week. Start early to avoid the midday sun on the exposed second half, carry more water than feels necessary, and treat Skaros Rock as the actual highlight rather than a detour off the main route.
End the hike in Oia for a second look, or turn back at Imerovigli for the sunset from Skaros Rock instead if you’ve already done Oia’s version on day one. Either way, dinner is earned; anywhere along the caldera rim works after a 10km walk.
Before you go
Wear real walking shoes, not sandals, for day six specifically; the volcanic rock on the trail’s second half punishes flip-flops. For a final flex day and a Cyclades ferry option, our 7-day itinerary builds on this one, and our Santorini guide covers the whole island in one place if you want the reference version.
