Athens 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Athens 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Four days keeps the same spine as the 3 day plan and adds a fourth: the Acropolis and its museum, the Agora and Anafiotika, the National Archaeological Museum and Monastiraki, then Syntagma, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and a Lycabettus sunset. Still inside the city on purpose. Shorter trip? Use the 3 day version . More time? The 6 day plan extends this same route.
Book these before you go
- Acropolis timed ticket via hhticket.gr : book up to 60 days ahead; peak-season slots sell out 5 to 7 days out.
- Skip-the-line Acropolis and Parthenon tour : a fixed slot beats gambling on same-day availability in summer.
- Athens hotel rates : Koukaki and Plaka rooms move fast June through September.
The 4 days at a glance
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Acropolis, Parthenon, Acropolis Museum |
| Day 2 | Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Plaka, Anafiotika |
| Day 3 | National Archaeological Museum, Monastiraki, Psyrri |
| Day 4 | Syntagma, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Lycabettus |
Day 1: The Acropolis, done at the right hour
Book the 8am slot through hhticket.gr, especially if you are travelling June through August, since peak slots vanish five to seven days out. Entry is 30 EUR flat, timed, capped at roughly 20,000 visitors a day. Go straight to the Acropolis Museum after: 20 EUR flat, a separate ticket, worth the full two hours, not the twenty-minute pass-through most visitors give it. Lunch in Koukaki, not on the Acropolis approach, where prices double for the view.
Day 2: Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Plaka, Anafiotika
Morning at the Ancient Agora, 8 EUR in summer, 4 in winter, no timed slots required. The Temple of Hephaestus here is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple standing anywhere. Walk to the Roman Agora next door for the octagonal Tower of the Winds, worth twenty minutes, not an afternoon. Spend the rest of the day in Plaka, but do not stop at the main lanes; push into Anafiotika instead, fewer than fifty whitewashed houses built overnight in the 1840s, genuinely quiet. Dinner in Psyrri if you want noise, Koukaki if you do not.
Day 3: National Archaeological Museum, Monastiraki, Psyrri
Get to the National Archaeological Museum early, before the tour groups arrive. Twenty euros flat, worth every minute of the two hours it deserves: Mycenaean gold masks, the Antikythera Mechanism, a collection most short-stay visitors never see. Lunch at Varvakios market on Athinas Street, running since 1886, ringed by stew houses that feed locals, not tourists. Spend the afternoon at Monastiraki’s flea market, then head to Psyrri for dinner and its livelier bar scene after dark.
Day 4: Syntagma, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Lycabettus
Time your morning at Syntagma Square for the changing of the guard, the Evzones’ slow ceremony on the hour, longer on Sunday. A five-minute walk away, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, 8 EUR full price, 4 EUR concession, is a stretch of towering columns that does not need a special trip of its own. Cut through the National Garden for shade if the heat is up. In the evening, walk or take the funicular up Mount Lycabettus, roughly 7 to 10 EUR one-way if you would rather not climb, for sunset: the Acropolis lit against the sea from up here beats the view from the Acropolis itself. Dinner in Kolonaki at the hill’s base afterward.
How much walking does this itinerary involve?
A lot, and on uneven marble and cobblestones. Days 1 and 2 alone cover the Acropolis hill, the Agora and Plaka’s slopes, easily 8 to 10 kilometers on foot. Wear shoes that are already broken in, and budget an afternoon coffee stop rather than pushing straight through the heat between sights.
Is Lycabettus worth adding to a shorter trip?
Yes, if sunset views matter to you more than one extra hour of sleep. The funicular or the free 30 to 45 minute walk both work; the payoff is a skyline view over the lit Acropolis that the hill itself cannot give you, since you cannot see the Acropolis from the Acropolis.
Book the Acropolis slot the same day you book your flights. Everything across these four days builds around that single reservation.
