Athens in 5 Days: Add the Peloponnese to the Mix
Five days keeps the same spine as the shorter trips (Acropolis, Cape Sounion, Aegina, Delphi) and adds a full day in the Peloponnese: Nafplio, Mycenae, and Epidaurus in one loop. Shorter trip? See the 4 day version. Longer? The 6 day version adds a second island.

Day 1: The Acropolis, Done Right
Book the 8am Acropolis slot before anything else. The official timed-entry platform is hhticket.gr , and peak-season slots go 5-7 days out. Entry is a flat EUR 30, no winter discount anymore since the old multi-site combo ticket was discontinued in April 2025 (confirmed on odysseus.culture.gr ). Walk the Propylaea, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike, then go straight into the Acropolis Museum next door, the second half of the visit, not an add-on.
In the evening, cut through Anafiotika (fewer than fifty whitewashed houses built overnight in the 1840s under a law granting ownership of anything finished between sunset and sunrise) before dinner in Koukaki or Psirri. Day 2: Cape Sounion at Sunset
Seventy kilometers down the coast through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza sits the Temple of Poseidon, 1-1.5 hours each way by car. The site itself only takes 30-45 minutes to walk; the rest of the day is the drive and the wait for the light. Go in the afternoon and time it for sunset. Look for Lord Byron’s name carved into a column while you’re there.
Day 3: Aegina, the Easy Island
Piraeus is 25 minutes from Monastiraki on Metro Line 1, and Aegina is the easiest island it reaches: a conventional ferry runs 70-75 minutes for EUR 9-14.50, or a Flying Dolphin catamaran covers it in about 40 minutes for EUR 15-20 (check sailings on Ferryhopper ). Pistachio orchards, the Temple of Aphaia, and a working harbor town make it worth the whole day.
Day 4: Delphi
About 180km from Athens, 2.5-3 hours over Mount Parnassus, and worth every minute of the drive (background on the site from Visit Greece , the official tourism authority). The KTEL public bus from Liosion terminal runs up to four times daily, around EUR 16.40 one-way, or take a packaged tour if you’d rather not handle the timetable. Full day either way, 5-6 hours in transit alone. Walk the Sacred Way, see the Temple of Apollo, and don’t skip the museum at the site’s base.
Day 5: Nafplio, Mycenae, and Epidaurus
This is the day most short Athens trips never attempt, and it’s the one that earns the fifth day. Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, sits about 137km out (1h50-2h10 by car or KTEL bus, roughly EUR 13-19 one-way). Mycenae and Epidaurus each sit 130-140km away and usually fold into the same loop with a Corinth Canal photo stop, around 320km round trip. If your dates land late June through August, check the Athens Epidaurus Festival program first (the 2026 season runs roughly June 20 to August 29, with performances most Friday and Saturday nights in the 2,400-year-old theater itself, acoustics included). A guided day tour covers all three plus the canal stop without you doing the driving.
One honest caveat: don’t try to squeeze Meteora into this trip instead. It’s 350km and 4-4.5 hours each way, and the 13-14 hour round-trip day tours that exist for it are a bad trade, a rushed hour or two at the monasteries after a full day on a coach. Five days is for the Peloponnese. Meteora needs its own overnight visit.

Why Isn’t Meteora on This List?
Because it needs an overnight to do properly, and a five day trip built around single-day loops doesn’t have room for one without cutting something else. The 350km drive each way and the monasteries’ split visiting hours make a same-day round trip a genuine gamble; save Meteora for a trip where it gets its own night in Kalambaka.
Do You Need a Car for Any of This?
Not really. Ferries handle Aegina, buses and tours handle Sounion, Delphi, and the Peloponnese loop. A rental only pays off if you want to set your own pace through the Peloponnese sites instead of following a tour schedule.
By day five you should have left the city three separate times and never once felt like you were wasting a day away from “real Athens.” That’s the whole point.
