Athens in 2 Days: Enough for the Hill and One Day Trip
Two days isn’t enough to “do Athens,” so don’t try. Book the Acropolis for day one, then spend day two proving the city works as a Greece base rather than a stopover: Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon at sunset, 70km down the coast. Longer trip? The 3 day version adds a Saronic island; the 7 day version adds three of them.

Day 1: The Acropolis, Done Right
Book the 8am Acropolis slot before anything else. The official timed-entry platform is hhticket.gr , and peak-season slots go 5-7 days out. Entry is a flat EUR 30, no winter discount anymore since the old multi-site combo ticket was discontinued in April 2025 (confirmed on odysseus.culture.gr ). Walk the Propylaea, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike, then go straight into the Acropolis Museum next door. It’s the second half of this visit, not an add-on, and the glass floor over live excavations makes the case itself.
In the evening, cut through Anafiotika (fewer than fifty whitewashed houses built overnight in the 1840s, under a law granting ownership of anything finished between sunset and sunrise) before dinner in Koukaki or Psirri, not on Plaka’s main tourist strip. Day 2: Cape Sounion at Sunset
Seventy kilometers down the coast through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza sits the Temple of Poseidon, 1-1.5 hours each way by car, longer by bus or tour. The site itself only takes 30-45 minutes to walk; the rest of the day is the drive and the wait for the light. Go in the afternoon, not the morning, and time it for sunset, that’s the entire point of the trip. Look for Lord Byron’s name carved into a column while you’re there.
If you’d rather stay closer to town, swap Sounion for a first look at Piraeus instead: 25 minutes from Monastiraki on Metro Line 1, and the port that puts every Greek island within reach whenever you come back with more time.

Is Two Days Enough to Add a Day Trip?
Barely, and only one. Cape Sounion works because the site itself takes under an hour and the rest is a scenic drive timed for sunset, so it doesn’t eat into the Acropolis day. A Saronic island needs a full day on its own; if you want Aegina or Hydra too, you need a third day, not a rearranged second one.
Do You Need a Car for Any of This?
No. The Acropolis and city center are walkable, and Cape Sounion is easily reached by KTEL bus, a half-day tour, or a taxi if you’re short on time. A rental only starts to make sense once you’re adding Delphi or the Peloponnese, which need more than two days anyway.
Don’t spend both days circling the same three blocks around the Acropolis. Get the hill right on day one, then get out of the city on day two.
