Muscat 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm, the Musandam coast, and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat itself has not been hit and is operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.

Day 1: Grand Mosque and Mutrah
Morning at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (8 to 11am, non-Muslim hours, closed Fridays; strict modest dress, abayas rentable around 2 OMR). Afternoon walking the Corniche in Mutrah, then Mutrah Souq once it reopens around 4pm for frankincense, silver khanjars, and textiles.
Day 2: Old Muscat and the Royal Opera House
Morning in Old Muscat: Al Alam Palace exterior, the flanking Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, then the National Museum of Oman (around OMR 5, Saturday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm). Afternoon tour of the Royal Opera House Muscat (around OMR 2, daily except Friday), evening at Qurum beach and park.
Day 3: Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab
A full coast day. Bimmah Sinkhole (about 1.5 hours down the coast road) first, then Wadi Shab (1.5 to 2 hours from Muscat): a short boat crossing (around 1 OMR), a roughly 45-minute walk through canyon pools, then the swim into the cave with the waterfall. Water shoes matter here; the rock is sharp and slick underfoot.
Day 4: Nizwa
Drive inland to Nizwa (about 1.5 hours), the old interior capital, for the fort, the souq, and, if it’s a Friday and you can manage a genuinely early start (around 6am), the goat market before it winds down mid-morning. Head back to Muscat by evening; if this day interests you more than a beach afternoon, that’s usually the sign the Oman road trip itineraries are the better fit for a next visit.

A rental car earns its cost on Days 3 and 4 specifically; taxis in Muscat are mostly unmetered and fine for the city itself, but the coast and interior day trips are genuinely easier self-driven or booked as a tour.
The honest verdict: four days is where Muscat naturally starts nudging you toward the wider country, Nizwa in particular is a preview of what a longer Oman road trip looks like.
