Srinagar 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Before you book: Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed, security-sensitive region. The April 2025 Pahalgam attack, 26 people killed at Baisaran meadow, triggered a brief India-Pakistan military escalation, and the US State Department (“Do Not Travel” for J&K outside Ladakh) and UK Foreign Office (against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar and Gulmarg) both currently advise against travel here. Check your government’s current advisory first. Gulmarg specifically has been reported fully open with stepped-up security, and this plan assumes a precaution-first trip with a registered operator, not a spontaneous one.
Four days is the city core plus one real day trip. This keeps the Dal Lake, garden and old-city days intact and adds Gulmarg rather than squeezing it into an already full day.
Day 1: Dal Lake
- Arrive at Srinagar Airport (SXR), transfer to a houseboat booked with a registered operator, confirmed by name and current photos.
- Afternoon shikara ride, official rate roughly ₹750-800/hour, agreed through your houseboat, not with a boatman on the water.
- Dinner on the houseboat.
Day 2: Mughal gardens
- Nishat Bagh (1633, twelve terraces) and Shalimar Bagh (1619, 410 fountains) in the morning.
- Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal in the afternoon, Pari Mahal for the best single Dal Lake panorama of any of the gardens.
Day 3: Old city and shrines
- Hazratbal Shrine in the morning, respectful and modest dress, outer courtyard only.
- The old city walk: Khanqah of Shah Hamdan and Jamia Masjid, both free outside prayer times.
- Afternoon crafts stop at a fixed-price government emporium, not a driver-arranged shop.
Day 4: Gulmarg and departure
- Early start, roughly 1.5-2 hours each way (~50km). The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases: Phase 1, Gulmarg to Kongdori, roughly ₹740-810 round trip; Phase 2, up to Apharwat Peak at nearly 4,000m, adds roughly ₹920-1,010 and only runs if Phase 1 is operating. Combined, budget around ₹1,800.
- Winter means skiing; summer means meadows, pony rides and one of the highest golf courses in the world. Bring a real layer for Apharwat regardless of season, it’s cold up there year-round.
- Return to Srinagar in the evening for departure the next morning, or transfer straight to the airport if your flight allows.

One concrete tip: don’t book a flight out the same evening as your Gulmarg day. The drive back can run long if weather or traffic doesn’t cooperate, and a missed flight from a mountain day trip is a genuinely common problem here.
