Srinagar 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Before you book: Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed, security-sensitive region. On 22 April 2025, militants killed 26 people, mostly tourists, at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, an attack that triggered a brief India-Pakistan military escalation before a ceasefire held from 10 May 2025. The US State Department (“Do Not Travel” for J&K outside Ladakh) and UK Foreign Office (against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg) both currently advise against travel here. Check your government’s current advisory first. The Valley is also functioning, busy, and running with heavy security along this entire circuit, so this plan is precaution-first, with a registered operator, not a “just go” one.
Seven days is the full circuit: city core, both major mountain day trips, Pahalgam handled honestly, and a wildlife day at the end rather than a rushed departure morning.
Day 1: Dal Lake
- Arrive at Srinagar Airport (SXR), transfer to a houseboat booked with a registered operator, confirmed by name and current photos.
- Afternoon shikara ride, official rate roughly ₹750-800/hour, agreed through your houseboat first, not with a boatman on the water.
- Dinner on the houseboat.
Day 2: Mughal gardens and Shankaracharya Temple
- Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh in the morning; Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal after lunch, Pari Mahal for the best single Dal Lake view of the four.
- Late afternoon: Shankaracharya Temple, roughly 240 steps, with a security checkpoint that frequently bars phones and cameras, leave electronics with your driver.
Day 3: Old city, Nigeen Lake and crafts
- Morning: the old city walk, Khanqah of Shah Hamdan and Jamia Masjid, plus Hazratbal Shrine’s outer courtyard, modest dress throughout.
- Afternoon: Nigeen Lake, the quieter shikara alternative to Dal.
- A fixed-price government emporium for Pashmina (genuine starts around ₹8,000) or papier-mache, not a driver-arranged shop.
Day 4: Gulmarg
- Roughly 1.5-2 hours each way (~50km). Gondola Phase 1 runs roughly ₹740-810 round trip, Phase 2 adds roughly ₹920-1,010, combined around ₹1,800. Reported fully open post-2025 with a stepped-up security presence.
Day 5: Sonamarg
- Roughly 2.5 hours each way (~80km). Thajiwas Glacier on foot or by pony, meadow best in late spring and early summer. Pack lunch, Sonamarg itself has limited options.
Day 6: Pahalgam
- Roughly 2.5-3 hours each way (~90km). Pahalgam town, the Lidder valley, and the Betaab and Aru valleys are the draw. Baisaran meadow, a few kilometers outside town, is where the April 2025 attack happened; verify Baisaran’s own reopening status separately from “is Pahalgam town open,” since the two aren’t the same question and current status shifts. Go with a registered operator and stay updated close to your travel date.
Day 7: Dachigam National Park and departure
- Dachigam, about 22km from Srinagar, protects the critically endangered hangul (Kashmir stag), fewer than 300 of which survive. A permit is required, verify current arrangements with your operator ahead of time.
- A slow final hour on Dal Lake before the airport, rather than rushing straight there, is worth it, mist and shikaras at sunrise is the image most people actually remember afterward.
- Transfer to the airport with a wide buffer for security screening.

One concrete tip: don’t front-load Pahalgam early in the trip on the assumption you’ll “get it over with.” Do the gentler days first, then decide close to the date whether current conditions still support the Pahalgam day as planned.
