Srinagar 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Before you book: Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed, security-sensitive region. The April 2025 Pahalgam attack, 26 people killed at Baisaran meadow, triggered a brief India-Pakistan military escalation, and the US State Department (“Do Not Travel” for J&K outside Ladakh) and UK Foreign Office (against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar) both currently advise against travel here. Check your government’s current advisory first. The Valley is also genuinely functioning, busy and heavily secured, so this is a precaution-first plan, booked with registered operators, not a “just go” itinerary.
Two days is enough for Dal Lake and the Mughal gardens, not much else. This is the tight version: water, gardens, one old-city pass, done properly rather than rushed across four things.
Day 1: Dal Lake
- Fly into Srinagar Airport (SXR) and transfer straight to your houseboat, booked with a registered operator, confirmed by name and current photos beforehand.
- Late afternoon shikara ride on Dal Lake. Official rate is roughly ₹750-800 an hour; agree the fare through your houseboat before you get on the water, not after.
- Dinner on the houseboat, Wazwan-style if you’ve arranged it ahead with your host.
Day 2: Mughal gardens, old city and departure
- Morning: Nishat Bagh (built 1633, twelve terraces, the best combined view of the lake and the Pir Panjal range) and Shalimar Bagh (1619, the largest, 410 fountains), both a short drive apart.
- Midday: a stop at a fixed-price government emporium for Pashmina or papier-mache, not wherever your driver suggests. Genuine Pashmina starts around ₹8,000; anything suspiciously cheap and “extra soft” likely isn’t real.
- Afternoon: transfer back to the airport.

Book these before you go:
- A Dal Lake houseboat with a registered operator
- A Dal Lake shikara and gardens tour if you’d rather not negotiate a boatman cold
- Your India e-visa through the official portal, if not already sorted
One concrete tip: don’t schedule your flight out for the same afternoon as your garden visit. Kashmir’s roads and airport security both run slower than the schedule suggests, and a tight connection turns a good last morning into a stressful one.
