Hoi An 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Two days is the bare minimum for Hoi An and covers the Ancient Town plus a slower day of beach and countryside, no day trips. If you can spare more, our 3-day itinerary adds My Son, and our 7-day itinerary fits in every day trip worth doing.

Book these before you go
- A tailor fitting slot if you want a garment made while you’re here: real bespoke needs 3-5 days, so order on day one.
- A Cam Thanh basket-boat trip , the calm private version rather than the loud group one.
- A Da Nang airport transfer : Hoi An has no airport of its own, so this is the first and last leg of every trip.
Day 1: Ancient Town, on foot
Morning: Fly into Da Nang International Airport and transfer to Hoi An, roughly 30-45 minutes by Grab or taxi. Skip the fixed-price offers from touts outside arrivals; a metered or app-based ride runs noticeably less. Sort your Vietnam e-visa before you fly, only through the official evisa.gov.vn portal, not a copycat site charging double.
Afternoon: Walk the UNESCO-listed Ancient Town for free. The streets themselves cost nothing; the ~120,000 VND coupon booklet only buys entry to five of roughly 20 heritage sites, so decide later if you want it. See the Japanese Covered Bridge (Chua Cau) from outside first, then decide if a coupon on the bridge itself is worth it.
Evening: The old town after dark is the reason most people come: lantern-lit streets, and if your dates land on the 14th of the lunar month, the monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival, when street power is cut and candle-lanterns go out onto the Thu Bon. If you want anything tailored, place the order tonight: get two or three quotes, order one test item first, and pay a modest deposit, not the full amount.
Day 2: Beach, village, canals
Morning: An Bang Beach, a few kilometres from the old town and the better-kept of Hoi An’s two beaches (Cua Dai has visible erosion), per Vietnam’s official tourism site . Cafes here handle sunbeds and food well enough that a resort day pass isn’t necessary.
Afternoon: Tra Que herb village, a short ride north, for a working session in the plots rather than just a walk-through. Then the Cam Thanh water-coconut canals by basket boat, the calm private version rather than the group one where an operator spins the boat for photos.
Evening: Pick up your tailoring if you ordered it on day one, checking the fabric and fit in person before paying the balance. Transfer back to Da Nang Airport, allowing 45 minutes in traffic.
Is 2 days enough for Hoi An?
It’s enough to see the Ancient Town properly and get one slower day of beach and countryside, but it rules out any day trips at all. If My Son or Da Nang are on your list, our 3-day itinerary is the next step up.
Whatever you cut from these two days, don’t cut the free evening walk through the old town: it costs nothing and it’s the reason most people remember Hoi An at all.
