Srinagar 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Before you book: Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed, security-sensitive region. The April 2025 Pahalgam attack, 26 people killed at Baisaran meadow, triggered a brief India-Pakistan military escalation, and the US State Department (“Do Not Travel” for J&K outside Ladakh) and UK Foreign Office (against all travel to J&K, naming Srinagar, Gulmarg and Sonamarg) both currently advise against travel here. Check your government’s current advisory first. The Valley is also functioning, busy, and running with heavy security on this exact circuit, so plan precaution-first, with a registered operator, not on a whim.
Five days gives Gulmarg and Sonamarg their own full days each, on top of the city core. Nothing here is rushed against a same-day departure.
Day 1: Dal Lake
- Arrive at Srinagar Airport (SXR), transfer to a houseboat booked with a registered operator, confirmed by name and current photos.
- Afternoon shikara ride, official rate roughly ₹750-800/hour, agreed through your houseboat first.
- Dinner on the houseboat.
Day 2: Mughal gardens
- Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh in the morning; Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal in the afternoon, Pari Mahal for the best single Dal Lake view of the four gardens.
Day 3: Old city and shrines
- Hazratbal Shrine in the morning, outer courtyard, modest dress.
- The old city walk: Khanqah of Shah Hamdan and Jamia Masjid.
- Afternoon crafts stop at a fixed-price government emporium.
Day 4: Gulmarg
- Roughly 1.5-2 hours each way. Gondola Phase 1 (Gulmarg-Kongdori) runs roughly ₹740-810 round trip, Phase 2 (Kongdori-Apharwat) adds roughly ₹920-1,010, combined around ₹1,800. Winter brings skiing, summer brings meadows and one of the highest golf courses anywhere.
Day 5: Sonamarg and departure
- Roughly 2.5 hours each way (~80km). Thajiwas Glacier is the main draw, reachable on foot or by pony, with the meadow around it at its best in late spring and early summer.
- Pack a proper lunch, options in Sonamarg itself are limited and geared toward day-trippers.
- Return to Srinagar for a last dinner, or transfer straight to the airport if timing allows.

One concrete tip: don’t try to combine Gulmarg and Sonamarg into a single long day, even though the map makes it look possible. Both are full days on their own once you count the drive, and mountain roads here close with little warning.
