Muscat 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm, the Musandam coast, and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat itself has not been hit and is operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.

Day 1: Grand Mosque and Mutrah
Morning at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (8 to 11am, non-Muslim visiting hours, closed Fridays; strict modest dress, abayas rentable around 2 OMR). Afternoon in Mutrah: the Corniche walk, then Mutrah Souq once it reopens around 4pm, one of the oldest working Arab souqs, thick with frankincense, silver khanjars, and textiles down narrow lanes. Catch the early evening light from Mutrah Fort above the harbor.
Day 2: Old Muscat and the Royal Opera House
Morning in Old Muscat: Al Alam Palace from outside the gates, the 16th-century Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts flanking it (exterior only), then the National Museum of Oman (around OMR 5, Saturday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm). In the afternoon, tour the Royal Opera House Muscat (around OMR 2, daily except Friday) and wind down at Qurum beach and park before the evening.
Day 3: Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab
A full coast day, best done with a rental car or driver. Bimmah Sinkhole (about 1.5 hours down the coast road) is a quick swim stop in a collapsed limestone crater. Continue to Wadi Shab (1.5 to 2 hours from Muscat), the region’s best-known hike: a short boat crossing (around 1 OMR), then roughly 45 minutes of walking through canyon pools to a cave you swim into for the waterfall inside. Bring water shoes; the rock underfoot is sharp and slick.

Taxis in Muscat are mostly unmetered, so agree the fare before you get in; for Day 3 specifically, a rental car or a booked tour beats trying to arrange one-off taxis for the round trip.
The honest verdict: three days is enough to add real range, Mutrah, Old Muscat, the Opera House, and one genuinely memorable coast day, without needing a multi-day road trip.
