Colombo 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Note: an earlier version of this page tried to fit Sigiriya in as a same-day trip from Colombo. It isn’t one, Sigiriya and Dambulla sit roughly 3.5-4 hours away each way, a 12-14 hour round trip that leaves almost no time at the site itself. Seven days genuinely covers more ground than a padded city stay: our 6-day itinerary (city core, Galle, Kandy, Bentota, Negombo) with an honest two-day Cultural Triangle overnight added instead of a rushed day trip. Shorter trip? Our 5-day and 6-day itineraries cover the city-and-day-trips core without it.

Book these before you go
- Apply for the ETA at eta.gov.lk : free for 40 nationalities since May 2026.
- Ministry of Crab : reserve ahead if it’s on the list.
- Book a Kandy-Sigiriya-Dambulla overnight tour if you’d rather have transport and both overnight stays sorted than arrange the Cultural Triangle route yourself.
- Check hotel rates for the trip : a full week is worth comparing weekly-rate deals against nightly ones.
Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face Green
Morning: Fort’s colonial core and the Old Dutch Hospital precinct.
Afternoon: Pettah’s Sea Street gold trade, the Kathiresan Kovils, Wolvendaal Church, and the Jami-Ul-Alfar Red Mosque.
Evening: Galle Face Green from 5pm, sunset street food and kite-flying. Dinner at Ministry of Crab if booked ahead.
Day 2: Temples, museum, and the tower
Morning: Gangaramaya Temple (~LKR 300 donation) and Seema Malaka, a 1976 Bawa rebuild on Beira Lake.
Midday: National Museum of Colombo (~LKR 1,200, closed Monday) and Independence Square.
Evening: Colombo Lotus Tower (~$20) for the sunset view.
Day 3: Galle by the coastal train
The coastal train runs feet from the ocean for much of the roughly 2.5-hour ride. Galle Fort’s ramparts circle the old town in under an hour. Get an early train back to Colombo, tomorrow’s an early start heading the opposite direction.
Day 4: Travel to Kandy
Roughly 2.5-3 hours from Colombo by train or car. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (~LKR 1,500) anchors the afternoon, and staying overnight here, rather than rushing back the same day, means you’re not doing the drive twice in one week. A quieter evening in Kandy beats a late train back to Colombo on travel day one of two.
Day 5: Dambulla and Sigiriya, the overnight that earns its own days
Dambulla Cave Temple, with its centuries of Buddhist rock-cave murals and statues, is worth the morning on the way from Kandy. Sigiriya, the ancient rock fortress, is the afternoon’s main event, a genuine climb with real frescoes and the mystery of the site itself as the payoff, and it deserves the energy of a fresh day rather than an add-on after Kandy sightseeing. A foreigner-priced entry ticket applies at the gate, verify the current rate before you go, historically one of the pricier single-site tickets on the island. Overnight near Sigiriya rather than pushing straight back to Colombo, the drive is long enough that arriving after dark isn’t worth saving the extra hotel night.
Day 6: Return to Colombo
The drive or train back runs several hours, treat this as a travel day rather than scheduling sightseeing on top of it. A relaxed evening back in the city, Mount Lavinia’s beach or a quiet dinner, both work well after two demanding days in the Cultural Triangle.
Day 7: A last half day, then departure
Bentota’s beach or Negombo’s fish market and lagoon both work as a relaxed final half day depending on which direction suits your flight timing, Negombo especially if it’s near the airport for your departure. Keep the pace light, you’ve covered the city, two major day trips, and a full Cultural Triangle overnight by this point.
Which 7-day split actually works?
Two city days, one coastal day trip (Galle), and a genuine two-day Cultural Triangle overnight (Kandy, Dambulla, Sigiriya) with a light final day is a realistic week that doesn’t pretend Colombo itself needs seven days. If the Cultural Triangle overnight feels like too much for this trip, our 6-day itinerary drops it in favor of Bentota and Negombo as straightforward day trips instead.
