Colombo 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Six days is our 5-day itinerary (city core, Galle, Kandy, a rest day) with a Bentota beach day and a Negombo day added, both genuine day trips rather than padding. Colombo itself is honestly a 1-2 day city, so a plan this long leans on day trips the way an honest six-day itinerary should. If a full week feels like more than you need, drop back to the 5-day version ; if you want the Cultural Triangle added too, our 7-day itinerary builds that in as an overnight.

Book these before you go
- Apply for the ETA at eta.gov.lk : free for 40 nationalities since May 2026.
- Ministry of Crab : reserve ahead if it’s on the list.
- Book a Kandy day tour from Colombo and a Bentota beach day trip if you’d rather not self-drive either.
- Check Colombo hotel rates : a full week is worth comparing weekly-rate deals against nightly ones.
Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face Green
Morning: Fort’s colonial core and the Old Dutch Hospital precinct.
Afternoon: Pettah’s Sea Street gold trade, the Kathiresan Kovils, Wolvendaal Church, and the Jami-Ul-Alfar Red Mosque.
Evening: Galle Face Green from 5pm, sunset street food and kite-flying. Dinner at Ministry of Crab if booked ahead.
Day 2: Temples, museum, and the tower
Morning: Gangaramaya Temple (~LKR 300 donation) and Seema Malaka, a 1976 Bawa rebuild on Beira Lake.
Midday: National Museum of Colombo (~LKR 1,200, closed Monday) and Independence Square.
Evening: Colombo Lotus Tower (~$20) for the sunset view.
Day 3: Galle by the coastal train
The coastal train runs feet from the ocean for much of the roughly 2.5-hour ride. Galle Fort’s ramparts circle the old town in under an hour. Early train out, mid-to-late afternoon back.
Day 4: Kandy, the long day trip
Kandy is roughly 2.5-3 hours by train, workable as a day trip with an early departure. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (~LKR 1,500) is the reason to go. Head back on an evening train and keep the night easy.
Day 5: Bentota, the beach day trip
Bentota, about 1.5 hours out, is the straightforward beach escape, no historic-fort agenda attached, just sand and a proper seafood lunch at a beachside spot. Head back to Colombo by early evening rather than pushing a late return on a beach day.
Day 6: Negombo and a relaxed close
Negombo, about an hour out and close to the airport, is a natural low-key day: the fish market and a lagoon boat trip, a different pace from the rest of the trip. If you’d rather stay in the city, Mount Lavinia’s beach works just as well as a final morning. Either way, keep the afternoon loose for last-minute shopping rather than scheduling another full sightseeing block.
Is 6 days enough for Colombo?
Six days genuinely covers the city core plus four real day trips, Galle, Kandy, Bentota, and Negombo, honestly more day-trip-heavy than city-heavy, which is the accurate way to spend extra time around a 1-2 day capital. If Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle are calling too, that needs an overnight rather than another day trip, which is exactly what our 7-day itinerary builds in.
