Colombo 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Three days is our 2-day itinerary (Fort, Pettah, Galle Face, the temples, Mount Lavinia) with a genuine day trip added rather than squeezed in: Galle, by the coastal train that runs feet from the ocean for much of the ride. Need a second day trip too? Our 4-day itinerary adds Kandy on top of this.

Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face Green
Morning: Fort (Colombo 1), the colonial core, and the Old Dutch Hospital precinct, restored from a late-17th-century building.
Afternoon: Pettah Market: Sea Street’s gold trade, the working Kathiresan Kovils, and Wolvendaal Church (1749, still active). The candy-striped Jami-Ul-Alfar Red Mosque is a short detour, dress respectfully and skip prayer times.
Evening: Galle Face Green from 5pm, a lawn and promenade rather than a beach, with a genuine sunset street-food scene, isso wade and kite-flying included. Dinner at Ministry of Crab if you booked ahead.
Day 2: Temples, museum, and the tower
Morning: Gangaramaya Temple (~LKR 300 donation, cover shoulders/knees, shoes off) and Seema Malaka next door, a 1976 Geoffrey Bawa rebuild floating on Beira Lake, not untouched heritage.
Midday: National Museum of Colombo (~LKR 1,200, closed Monday), the Kandyan royal regalia is the highlight. Independence Square and the Arcade, which started as an 1889 asylum before its current life as an upscale mall.
Evening: Colombo Lotus Tower (~$20), the 29th-floor deck for a genuine 360-degree sunset view, a pricier splurge worth doing once. Dinner nearby before an early night, tomorrow starts early.
Day 3: Galle by the coastal train
Skip the 1.5-2 hour car ride and take the coastal train instead. It runs feet from the ocean for much of the route, a genuine highlight rather than dead transit time. Galle Fort itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Dutch Fort, rewards slow wandering, the ramparts circle the old town in under an hour on foot, past colonial buildings now holding cafes and boutique shops. Get an early train to maximize daylight at the fort, and catch a mid-to-late afternoon train back rather than the last, more crowded departure.
Is 3 days enough for Colombo?
Yes, and it’s the sweet spot most first-timers land on: the full city core plus one genuine day trip. It’s not enough to add Kandy as well without stretching an already-long day trip day even further, which is why our 4-day itinerary treats that as its own separate day. For what’s realistically reachable beyond Galle, see our day trips guide .
