Colombo 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Four days is our 3-day itinerary (city core plus a Galle day trip) with Kandy added as its own separate day rather than a rushed combination. Kandy is workable as a long day trip by an early train, but it deserves the full day, not a slot squeezed between other plans. Want a beach day instead? Our 5-day itinerary builds on this same spine.

Book these before you go
- Apply for the ETA at eta.gov.lk : free for 40 nationalities since May 2026.

- Book a Kandy day tour from Colombo if you’d rather not manage the early train yourself.

Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face Green
Morning: Fort’s colonial core and the Old Dutch Hospital precinct.
Afternoon: Pettah’s Sea Street gold trade, the Kathiresan Kovils, Wolvendaal Church (1749), and the candy-striped Jami-Ul-Alfar Red Mosque.
Evening: Galle Face Green from 5pm, sunset street food and kite-flying, not a beach. Dinner at Ministry of Crab if booked, or a simpler seafood spot otherwise.
Day 2: Temples, museum, and the tower
Morning: Gangaramaya Temple (~LKR 300 donation) and Seema Malaka, a 1976 Bawa rebuild on Beira Lake.
Midday: National Museum of Colombo (~LKR 1,200, closed Monday) and Independence Square, whose Arcade started as an 1889 asylum.
Evening: Colombo Lotus Tower (~$20) for the 29th-floor sunset view, a worthwhile once-only splurge.
Day 3: Galle by the coastal train
The coastal train from Colombo Fort runs feet from the ocean for much of the roughly 2.5-hour ride, a real highlight over the 1.5-2 hour car alternative. Galle Fort’s ramparts circle the old town in under an hour on foot, past colonial buildings holding cafes and boutique shops. Take an early train out and a mid-to-late afternoon train back to avoid the busiest last departure.
Day 4: Kandy, the long day trip that needs an early start
Kandy is roughly 2.5-3 hours from Colombo by train, workable as a day trip if you commit to an early departure, though plenty of visitors prefer an overnight given the total travel time. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (~LKR 1,500) is the reason to make the trip, budget real time here rather than rushing through. Head back on an evening train and keep the rest of the night unplanned, it’s a long day of travel on top of sightseeing.
Is 4 days enough for Colombo?
Four days comfortably covers the city core plus both Galle and Kandy, each with a full day rather than a rushed half-measure.
