Colombo: Where to Stay by Area

Colombo’s numbered postal-district system is a real, everyday reference here, not tourist-board branding, so it’s worth knowing before you pick an area. Four districts cover almost everything a first-time visitor needs, plus one beach suburb if the coast matters more than the center.

Kollupitiya (Colombo 3), the default first-timer pick
Kollupitiya is upscale, walkable to Galle Face Green, and dense with malls and embassies, the closest thing Colombo has to a default tourist base. It puts you within a short tuk-tuk or PickMe ride of the Old Dutch Hospital’s restaurants and Pettah’s markets alike, at a genuinely wide range of price points from mid-range international chains to boutique guesthouses.
Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7), for a quieter, leafier stay
Cinnamon Gardens is the old-money district, leafy streets, embassies, and Colombo’s largest park (Viharamahadevi Park) and the National Museum on its doorstep. It reads calmer at night than Kollupitiya’s malls-and-traffic strip, a genuine trade of some convenience for quiet.
Fort (Colombo 1), inside the Old Dutch Hospital precinct
Fort puts you literally inside the restored colonial dining-and-shopping precinct anchored by the Old Dutch Hospital, home to Ministry of Crab and Barefoot, plus the working government core and Colombo Fort railway station. It’s the pick if walking straight out to dinner or an early train (the coastal line to Galle leaves from here) matters more than a beachfront view.
Mount Lavinia, if the coast is the point
Mount Lavinia, about 10km south, is the closest genuine swimming beach to central Colombo, home to the 1805 colonial Mount Lavinia Hotel, a 200-plus-year property that started as a governor’s residence and served as a WWII hospital. Stay here if a beach stay outweighs proximity to Fort and Pettah, and budget the extra 20-30 minutes each way into the city center.
A note on money before you book
The LKR has run volatile through 2026 (roughly 335 to the US dollar as of August, worth verifying the current rate before you convert a nightly quote). Most hotels quote and charge in USD or LKR pegged to a daily rate; a 10% service charge is often added on top, so check the total before assuming a quoted rate is final.
