Colombo 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. Book or buy through them and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only point you to things we would actually use.
Five days is our 4-day itinerary (city core, Galle, Kandy) with a genuinely relaxed final day added, Mount Lavinia’s beach and Marine Drive, rather than another packed sightseeing day. Colombo itself is honestly a 1-2 day city, so this plan leans on day trips the way an honest longer itinerary should. Want even more? Our 6-day itinerary adds Bentota’s beaches on top of this.

Book these before you go
- Apply for the ETA at eta.gov.lk : free for 40 nationalities since May 2026.
- Ministry of Crab : reserve ahead if it’s on the list.
- Book a Kandy day tour from Colombo if you’d rather not manage the early train yourself.
- Check Colombo hotel rates : a full five nights is worth comparing weekly deals against nightly ones.
Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face Green
Morning: Fort’s colonial core and the Old Dutch Hospital precinct.
Afternoon: Pettah’s Sea Street gold trade, the Kathiresan Kovils, Wolvendaal Church, and the Jami-Ul-Alfar Red Mosque.
Evening: Galle Face Green from 5pm, sunset street food and kite-flying. Dinner at Ministry of Crab if booked ahead.
Day 2: Temples, museum, and the tower
Morning: Gangaramaya Temple (~LKR 300 donation) and Seema Malaka, a 1976 Bawa rebuild on Beira Lake.
Midday: National Museum of Colombo (~LKR 1,200, closed Monday) and Independence Square.
Evening: Colombo Lotus Tower (~$20) for the sunset view from the 29th floor.
Day 3: Galle by the coastal train
The coastal train runs feet from the ocean for much of the roughly 2.5-hour ride. Galle Fort’s ramparts circle the old town in under an hour on foot. Take an early train out, a mid-to-late afternoon one back.
Day 4: Kandy, the long day trip
Kandy is roughly 2.5-3 hours by train, workable as a day trip with an early departure. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (~LKR 1,500) is the reason to go, budget real time here rather than rushing it. Head back on an evening train and keep the night unplanned, two demanding days in a row deserve an easy close.
Day 5: Mount Lavinia and a genuinely relaxed last day
Mount Lavinia, about 10km south, is the closest genuine swimming beach, unlike Galle Face Green. Spend the morning here, lunch at a beachside spot, then walk part of Marine Drive back toward the city if you want a coastal stretch rather than a straight return. Keep the afternoon loose for last-minute shopping or a final temple visit rather than scheduling another full sightseeing block, you’ve earned the slower pace by day five.
Is 5 days enough for Colombo?
Five days comfortably covers the city core, Galle, and Kandy, plus a real rest day, honestly more than most visitors need for Colombo specifically, since the extra time here goes to day trips rather than the city itself. If Bentota’s beaches are calling too, our 6-day itinerary adds that without cutting anything from this plan. For quieter spots to fill any remaining downtime, see our hidden gems guide .
