Day 1: Arrival and walled-city orientation
Fixed-rate kiosk taxi from CTG (20,000 to 30,000 COP) into Getsemani or the Walled City. Walk the Old City’s plazas during the cooler afternoon, all part of the UNESCO-listed fortified core, then the ramparts near Baluarte Santo Domingo for sunset. Keep it an early night before six busy days.
Day 2: Rosario Islands or Playa Blanca
Boats leave Muelle de la Bodeguita around 8am. The standard trip runs 159,000 COP for an adult and 139,000 COP for a child, plus a separate 25,000 to 29,000 COP dock tax paid in cash at the pier. Book a reviewed operator over a dock tout, a caution the current UK FCDO advisory makes explicitly.
Day 3: Volcan del Totumo

Day 4: La Boquilla
About 20 minutes north, this fishing-village-turned-beach-club is the better afternoon than a second Bocagrande visit. A mangrove canoe tour or kitesurf lesson runs 50,000 to 150,000 COP.
Day 5: Bocagrande and a chiva party bus
Mornings here are for pharmacies, a supermarket run, and boardwalk shopping, not a beach day; the sand loses to what you saw on Day 2. In the evening, book a chiva party bus seat , about 50,000 COP for a shared 2 to 3 hour tour with live music and drinks included.
Day 6: San Basilio de Palenque
About 90 minutes each way, San Basilio de Palenque is the only surviving palenque, a settlement founded by self-liberated enslaved people, in Colombia, and carries its own UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition distinct from the walled city’s listing. A small-group guided day trip runs roughly 230,000 to 300,000 COP depending on group size, covering transport, a local guide, and lunch. This is a genuinely deeper pick than another beach day, engaging directly with the history behind the palenqueras you have likely already paid for a photo with in the walled city.

Is San Basilio de Palenque worth 90 minutes each way?
Yes, for anyone who wants more than a postcard version of Cartagena’s Afro-Colombian history. The town is the direct source of the palenquera tradition seen daily in the walled city, and a guided visit explains the maroon-community history behind it rather than leaving it as decorative color. It is a longer drive than any other day trip on this itinerary, which is why it earns a sixth day rather than displacing an earlier one.
Is six days too long without a second islands day?
Not really, if Palenque or a genuine rest day matters more to you than repeating Day 2. The Rosario Islands day covers the beach requirement once; a second identical trip mostly repeats the same boat, the same tax, and the same lunch. Swap Palenque back out for a second islands day only if you specifically want more beach time over more history.
