Cartagena 2 Day Itinerary (Old City First)
Two days here is Walled City orientation on arrival, then Castillo San Felipe and La Popa monastery on day two. Day 1: Arrival and the Walled City
Rafael Nunez International Airport (CTG) sits just 6 to 9km from the historic center, a 15 to 20 minute drive, genuinely one of the more convenient airport-to-old-town distances in the region. A fixed-rate taxi kiosk just outside arrivals prints a fare before you get in, roughly 20,000 to 30,000 COP into the Walled City, Getsemani, or Bocagrande; skip any driver who approaches before you reach that kiosk. Settle in, then spend the rest of the day walking the Old City’s plazas while the heat is tolerable: Plaza Bolivar, Plaza Santo Domingo, and Las Bovedas’ artisan market, free to browse. In the evening walk into Getsemani for dinner and the street art, best light late afternoon, ending back at the walls near Baluarte Santo Domingo for sunset, free and better than a rooftop bar charging for the same view.
Day 2: Castillo San Felipe and La Popa
Visit Castillo San Felipe de Barajas in the late afternoon, not midday; the fort has almost no shade and the heat by noon is genuinely punishing. Entry runs 38,000 to 50,000 COP for foreign visitors (sources disagree by a meaningful margin, verify before you go), plus 15,000 COP for an audio guide that explains the tunnel network engineered so footsteps carry to the guards above. Use the morning for La Popa monastery, the city’s highest point and best panoramic view, entry somewhere between 4,500 and 11,000 COP, before the day’s heat sets in.

Is two days enough to see Cartagena’s Walled City?
Enough to see it properly, not enough to see everything Cartagena offers. Two days covers the Old City’s plazas, one fortress, and one hilltop view without rushing any of it. It does not leave room for Getsemani’s deeper history or a day trip; treat this as a genuine Walled City trip, not a compressed version of a longer one.
Should you go inside Castillo San Felipe or just view it from outside?
Go inside. The exterior view from the road is a fraction of what the 38,000 to 50,000 COP entry buys: the tunnel network, the ramparts, and the batteries are the actual dramatic part, and they are only accessible past the gate.
Carry small COP bills for both days; card machines are common inside the walls but not universal, and street vendors rarely have change for a large note.
