Medellin 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Two days is enough for the honest highlights, not the whole city. Day one pairs a guided Comuna 13 tour with Plaza Botero and Centro; day two is the full Guatape and El Penol day trip. Day 1: Comuna 13 and Plaza Botero

Take the metro to San Javier station in the morning for a guided Comuna 13 tour. The outdoor escalators themselves are free, built in 2011 for residents, so the 80,000 to 120,000 COP fee buys you a guide who explains which mural marks which killing, worth paying for rather than wandering it alone. Skip any operator running an Escobar-themed version, that is a different, worse tour.

Metro back toward Centro after lunch for Plaza Botero, free and open around the clock, and the Museo de Antioquia next door (about 18,000 COP for foreign visitors) if you want the full Botero collection rather than just the 23 bronzes outside. Dinner and an early walk through Parque Lleras or Provenza is fine while it is still early, the scopolamine and dating-app risk documented by the UK’s FCDO concentrates after midnight, not at 8pm.

Day 2: Guatape and El Penol

Start early. Guatape is about two hours each way, so a late departure eats your whole day in transit. Climb the roughly 700 to 740 step staircase built into the rock for the reservoir view, entrance runs 35,000 to 40,000 COP, then walk Guatape town itself for the zocalo-covered building facades, a genuinely different sight from the rock next door despite the two towns arguing over which one owns it. Head back to Medellin by early evening; weekend traffic on the return can stretch the drive.

Is two days enough for Medellin?

Enough for the two things worth doing most: Comuna 13 and Guatape. It is not enough for Parque Arvi, a coffee finca, or a real look at Laureles. If either of those matters to you, this itinerary is the wrong length, go to the 3 day version instead.

Is the Comuna 13 tour worth it on a tight schedule?

Yes, and it is the one booking to make ahead of time. The escalators and streets cost nothing, so skipping the guide only saves you money, not time, and you lose the context that makes the neighborhood’s history make sense. Book it for the morning of day one so a late tour does not eat into your Guatape prep.

Pack cash in small denominations for both days, card machines go down more often outside El Poblado than anywhere a first-timer expects.
