Britain 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Seven days closes this loop out with the Lake District, keeping Liverpool as an overnight rather than a same-day dash from our 6-day version, then finishing in Windermere before the last train home. This is the full Grand Tour version of this family: Edinburgh, the Highlands, York, Liverpool and the Lake District in one loop, out via Kings Cross, back via Euston. Day 1: Arrive in Edinburgh
Depart Kings Cross in the morning, arrive Edinburgh Waverley early-to-mid afternoon, and spend the rest of the day on the Royal Mile. Overnight near the Old Town.
Day 2: Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat
Edinburgh Castle in the morning, GBP 21.50 online versus GBP 24 at the gate, Arthur’s Seat or Holyroodhouse in the afternoon.
Day 3: Royal Yacht Britannia
The former Royal Yacht at Ocean Terminal in Leith, a self-guided audio tour through five decks, about 25 minutes out by tram.
Day 4: The Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness
A full-day Highlands and Loch Ness tour covers roughly 300 miles through Glencoe and the Cairngorms. Overnight back in Edinburgh.
Day 5: York
Leave Edinburgh mid-morning, 1 hour 46 minutes to 2 hours to York. York Minster runs from around GBP 16 for standard entry, and the Shambles is free to wander. Overnight in York.
Day 6: Liverpool
A TransPennine Express service connects York to Liverpool Lime Street in roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. The Beatles Story at the Royal Albert Dock runs around GBP 19, then walk to the Cavern Quarter on Mathew Street. Overnight in Liverpool, since Day 7 continues on rather than doubling back to London from here.
Day 7: The Lake District
Does the Lake District fit after Liverpool, or should it come first?
After works better logistically. Liverpool to Oxenholme runs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours changing at Preston, then a short local branch line onto Windermere itself. Spend the day on a Windermere lake cruise between Bowness and Ambleside or Bowness and Lakeside, roughly GBP 14-18 depending on the route, 40 to 90 minutes on the water. In the evening, Avanti West Coast runs Oxenholme to Euston in 2 hours 39 minutes at the fastest, typically closer to 3 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes, closing out the loop into Euston, a different London terminus from the Kings Cross you left through on Day 1.

Only the Highlands day involves a coach rather than ordinary rail, everything else runs on tickets through nationalrail.co.uk . Pack for rain and wind in the Lake District especially, weather turns faster there than anywhere else on this loop.
