Britain 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Six days keeps York as an overnight rather than a same-day dash home, from our 5-day version, then adds Liverpool on the way south. It’s the first length here that finishes into Euston instead of Kings Cross, a genuinely different corner of London. Extend it with our 7-day version once the Lake District fits your dates.

Day 1: Arrive in Edinburgh
Depart Kings Cross in the morning, arrive Edinburgh Waverley early-to-mid afternoon, and spend the rest of the day on the Royal Mile. Overnight near the Old Town.
Day 2: Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat
Edinburgh Castle in the morning, GBP 21.50 online versus GBP 24 at the gate, Arthur’s Seat or Holyroodhouse in the afternoon.
Day 3: Royal Yacht Britannia
The former Royal Yacht at Ocean Terminal in Leith, a self-guided audio tour through five decks, about 25 minutes out by tram.
Day 4: The Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness
A full-day Highlands and Loch Ness tour covers roughly 300 miles through Glencoe and the Cairngorms. Overnight back in Edinburgh.
Day 5: York
Leave Edinburgh mid-morning, 1 hour 46 minutes to 2 hours to York. Spend the afternoon at York Minster , from around GBP 16 for standard sightseeing entry, and the Shambles, free to wander a few minutes away. Overnight in York this time, rather than pushing straight through to London.
Day 6: Liverpool
Is Liverpool worth the detour from York?
Yes, and it changes which London station you arrive into. A TransPennine Express service connects York to Liverpool Lime Street in roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. The Beatles Story at the Royal Albert Dock runs around GBP 19 and covers original instruments and handwritten lyrics across about 90 minutes; walk from there to the Cavern Quarter on Mathew Street afterward. One correction worth knowing: Liverpool’s waterfront lost its UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021 over new development, the first UK site ever stripped of the label, so don’t call it a UNESCO site if you read that elsewhere. Finish with the evening Avanti West Coast service into Euston, about 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45 minutes, a different London terminus than the one you left from.
Before you go
None of these six days need a car. The Highlands day is a booked coach, everything else runs on ordinary rail tickets through nationalrail.co.uk and avantiwestcoast.co.uk . Pack layers for Edinburgh, York and Liverpool alike, all three run cooler and windier than London most of the year, and remember you’re arriving into Euston at the end, not Kings Cross where you started.
