Britain 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Three days adds a second Edinburgh morning to the same arrival-and-castle core as our 2-day version, enough time for the Royal Yacht Britannia at Leith before the train home. Day 1: Arrive in Edinburgh
Depart Kings Cross in the morning, arrive Edinburgh Waverley early-to-mid afternoon. Walk the Royal Mile down to the Grassmarket, and spend the rest of the afternoon in the closes and wynds branching off both, where the actual Old Town texture lives. Overnight near the Old Town.
Day 2: Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat
Edinburgh Castle in the morning, GBP 21.50 online versus GBP 24 at the gate, then Arthur’s Seat in the afternoon if the weather is on your side, or Holyroodhouse if it isn’t.
Day 3: Royal Yacht Britannia
Is a third Edinburgh day worth it over pushing straight to York?
Yes, if Scotland is the actual point of the trip. The former Royal Yacht, moored at Ocean Terminal in Leith, runs a self-guided audio tour through five decks including the state apartments and engine room, and the tram out from the city centre takes about 25 minutes. Catch an afternoon or evening LNER train back to Kings Cross, or see visitscotland.com for the Caledonian Sleeper timetable if a later departure suits you better.
Before you go
Neither day here needs a car. The Old Town’s cobbles and closes are steep in places, wear shoes that can take it.
