Britain 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Five days breaks the Edinburgh core from our 4-day version on the way home, dropping into York for an afternoon since it sits on the exact same East Coast Main Line back to London. One extra hotel night, no backtracking. Extend it with our 6-day version once Liverpool fits your dates.

Day 1: Arrive in Edinburgh
Depart Kings Cross in the morning, arrive Edinburgh Waverley early-to-mid afternoon, and spend the rest of the day on the Royal Mile and the closes running off it. Overnight near the Old Town.
Day 2: Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat
Edinburgh Castle in the morning, GBP 21.50 online versus GBP 24 at the gate, Arthur’s Seat or Holyroodhouse in the afternoon.
Day 3: Royal Yacht Britannia
The former Royal Yacht at Ocean Terminal in Leith runs a self-guided audio tour through five decks, about 25 minutes out by tram. See visitscotland.com for current hours.
Day 4: The Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness
A full-day Highlands and Loch Ness tour covers roughly 300 miles through Glencoe and the Cairngorms, back to Edinburgh in the early evening. Overnight in the city one more time; Day 5 leaves in the morning.
Day 5: York on the way home
Should York come before Edinburgh or after?
After works better for this length. York sits directly on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh, so breaking the return journey there costs no backtracking, only a same-line stop. Leave Edinburgh mid-morning, about 1 hour 46 minutes to 2 hours to York, and spend the afternoon at York Minster , from around GBP 16 for standard sightseeing entry valid a full year, and the Shambles, the crooked medieval street a few minutes away, free to wander. Continue on to Kings Cross in the evening, another 1 hour 46 minutes to 2 hours; check current times on lner.co.uk before you fix a departure.
Before you go
None of these five days need a car. The Highlands day is a booked coach, not a rental, and every rail leg here runs on ordinary walk-up or advance tickets through nationalrail.co.uk . Pack layers, Edinburgh and York both run cooler than London most of the year, and keep your York bag light, you’re carrying it on and off two trains in one day.
