Auckland 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Seven days is the 6-day itinerary (CBD, Devonport, Waiheke, Rangitoto, west coast, Art Gallery and Kumeu) plus a full Day 7 on Tiritiri Matangi, a predator-free island sanctuary that needs booking well before you land, not the week of. Shorter trip? Work back through 2 to 6 days .
Book these before you go
- Tiritiri Matangi’s ferry, Wed-Sun only, books out Nov-Apr peak season, the single tightest booking on this whole plan.
- Rangitoto’s ferry, return-only, no same-day walk-on.
- A Waiheke wine tour or on-island transport for Day 3.
- Your CBD or Viaduct hotel, especially Dec-Feb summer.
- A multi-day rental car covering Days 5 and 6.
Day 1: CBD, the free way
Viaduct Harbour, the free Te Wero drawbridge into Wynyard Quarter, Silo Park, Karanga Plaza’s free tidal pool. War Memorial Museum ($32 international adult, current pricing at aucklandmuseum.com , Māori and Pacific galleries closed since May 2025), then Mt Eden’s free summit walk instead of the Sky Tower’s $47 deck. Dinner in the Britomart precinct.
Day 2: Devonport
AT-network ferry, $8-9 one-way on the $50/7-day HOP cap. Mt Victoria’s harbour view, North Head’s unlit WWII tunnels, lunch on the village main street, evening in Ponsonby or on Karangahape Road.
Day 3: Waiheke Island
Fullers360 , separate from HOP: $46.50 off-peak return (after 1pm) or $62 peak. Book a Waiheke wine tour on GetYourGuide since the ferry alone doesn’t reach the vineyards, or head to Onetangi Beach if wine isn’t the point.
Day 4: Rangitoto Island
Fullers360, $55 adult / $25 child return, return-only, no same-day walk-on. Auckland’s youngest volcano (~600 years old), roughly an hour each way to the summit. No food, water, or shade on the island, bring your own.
Day 5: the west coast beaches
Rent a car for this and Day 6. Piha (swim only between the patrol flags) or Muriwai (gannet colony, best Nov-Feb). Rent a car on Discover Cars . The Waitākere kauri-dieback rāhui closes interior bush tracks, not the beaches themselves, check current status at aucklandcouncil.govt.nz . Lock up and leave nothing visible at either car park.
Day 6: Auckland Art Gallery and Kumeu wine country
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (free, corner of Kitchener and Wellesley) in the morning, then a 20-minute drive to Kumeu in the afternoon: Kumeu River Wines (established 1944), Soljans Estate (established 1937), and Coopers Creek, a closer, cheaper alternative to Matakana’s roughly hour-long drive.
Day 7: Tiritiri Matangi Island
This is the day everything else on this plan has been building toward booking correctly. Tiritiri Matangi is an open, predator-free DOC scenic reserve and bird sanctuary, takahē, kōkako, and tīeke among the drawcards, its ferry operated by Explore Group with local iwi Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. The ferry runs Wed-Sun only, roughly 80 minutes each way, and books out well ahead in the Nov-Apr peak season, this is genuinely not a spontaneous day trip. Expect a full day, around seven hours total once you count both crossings, and strict biosecurity: shoes get scrubbed on arrival and departure to protect the island’s pest-free status. Return the rental car before you leave, you won’t need it again on this trip.
Skip these on a 7 day trip
Skip a second CBD-area museum or gallery day, you’ve already covered the War Memorial Museum and the Art Gallery; a repeat visit would eat into a day better spent resting before Tiritiri Matangi’s early ferry. Skip trying to add Great Barrier Island, it’s genuinely a multi-day trip on its own (a ~4.5-hour ferry or a short flight), not a slot inside a seven-day city-and-gulf plan.
Do you need to book Tiritiri Matangi in advance?
Yes, always, unlike Waiheke or Rangitoto where off-peak walk-up is often fine. Tiritiri Matangi’s ferry runs Wed-Sun only with limited capacity and books out well ahead in the Nov-Apr peak season, book this leg as soon as your travel dates are fixed, not once you’re already in Auckland.
Getting to Auckland and getting around
AirportLink bus to Puhinui Station then a train, about 45-60 minutes door to door, or the $20 flat-fare SkyDrive bus to Hobson Street. No airport rail exists as of 2026; the City Rail Link (13 September 2026) covers city-centre stations only.

Book Tiritiri Matangi’s ferry first, before the hotel, before the rental car, it’s the one reservation on this entire seven-day plan most likely to force you to move your whole trip.
