Auckland 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Four days is the 3-day itinerary (CBD, Devonport, Waiheke) plus a second gulf island, Rangitoto, rather than a slower version of the same three days. Not enough time for two islands? Book these before you go
- Rangitoto’s ferry, return-only tickets, no same-day walk-on, book ahead rather than assuming a walk-up spot.
- A Waiheke wine tour or on-island transport for Day 3.
- Your CBD or Viaduct hotel, especially Dec-Feb summer.
- An AT HOP card ($25) for Devonport and any city bus travel.
Day 1: CBD, the free way
Viaduct Harbour across the free Te Wero drawbridge into Wynyard Quarter, past Silo Park and Karanga Plaza’s free tidal pool. Then the War Memorial Museum ($32 international adult, current pricing at aucklandmuseum.com , Māori and Pacific galleries closed since May 2025), and Mt Eden’s free 10-minute summit walk instead of the Sky Tower’s $47 deck. Dinner in the Britomart precinct.
Day 2: Devonport
AT-network ferry, about $8-9 one-way on the $50/7-day HOP cap, 12 minutes each way. Mt Victoria for the harbour view, North Head for the unlit WWII tunnels (phone torch), lunch on the village main street, then a Ponsonby or Karangahape Road evening back in the city.
Day 3: Waiheke Island
Fullers360 booking, separate from HOP: $46.50 off-peak return (after 1pm departure) or $62 peak, about 40 minutes each way. Book a Waiheke wine tour on GetYourGuide since the ferry alone doesn’t reach the 30-plus vineyards, or head straight to Onetangi Beach on the north coast if wine isn’t the point.
Day 4: Rangitoto Island
Another Fullers360 booking, $55 adult / $25 child return, about 25 minutes each way, return-only with no same-day walk-on ticket. Rangitoto is Auckland’s youngest volcano, roughly 600 years old, and the summit walk is about an hour each way over black lava rock, allow three-plus hours total including the crossing. Bring your own food, water, and shade, there’s none on the island. Time the walk against your return sailing rather than the other way around, missing a Rangitoto ferry means a genuinely long wait for the next one.
Skip these on a 4 day trip
Skip Tiritiri Matangi and the west coast beaches this trip, both need a full day of their own and this plan is already two gulf islands deep. Skip a Motutapu extension off Rangitoto unless you’ve confirmed current DOC access and ferry timing well ahead, it’s easy to underestimate the extra time the causeway crossing adds.
Do you really need two gulf islands in one trip?
Waiheke and Rangitoto are different enough to justify both: Waiheke is wine, beaches, and a village to wander; Rangitoto is a genuinely striking volcanic hike with zero amenities. Doing both in four days works because they’re on separate days, trying to fit both into one day is the actual mistake.
Getting to Auckland and getting around
AirportLink bus to Puhinui Station then a train, about 45-60 minutes door to door on HOP fares, or the $20 flat-fare SkyDrive bus to Hobson Street, every 30 minutes. No airport rail exists as of 2026; the City Rail Link (13 September 2026) is a city-centre upgrade only. No rental car needed across these four days, ferries and buses cover everything.

Where to stay for 4 days
One base for all four nights, the CBD or Viaduct, keeps every day here a there-and-back trip. Compare current Auckland hotel rates on Booking.com , budget/hostel $130-190, mid-range four-star $220-350, both bands rise sharply Dec-Feb.
